Higher Level SEN Teaching Assistant

We are looking for a Higher Level SEN Teaching Assistant to join our expanding team, to be a part of this exciting new experience right from the start!

Do you have a background in SEMH, SEBD or ASD? Have you had experience with challenging behaviour? Do you have Team Teach or MAPA training? Have you covered lessons? Experience tutoring or teaching small groups?

This specialist school based in Newham is looking for a Therapeutic Education practitioner with experience of working with challenging children and young people. This is a specialist school that caters for young people who have been excluded or are at risk of being excluded from a mainstream school.

The Role

The purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant is to support the Class Teacher with all elements of the day-to-day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups, and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.

Summary of Role:

  1. Experience of working with hard-to-reach young people with SEMH/ACE's/ASD/Sensory and communication difficulties.
  2. We are looking for candidates who are 'Trauma informed' with a mentoring/coaching/teaching background and an understanding of Therapeutic Education.
  3. Have the ability to build strong, meaningful and healthy relationships.
  4. Who can maintain professional boundaries, are resilient, solution-focused, and reflective in their practice.

Key Duties
  1. Monitor pupils' conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult, or very challenging issues and keep records of incidents, health, and behaviour as necessary.
  2. Promote pupils' cognitive, social, emotional, behavioural, physical development and spiritual well-being through a whole Waking Day curriculum.
  3. Work with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/care professional.
  4. Assist the Class Teacher with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teachers.
  5. Know and understand the Class Teacher's curriculum planning and to plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups, and/or classes modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.
  6. To provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
  7. Support the day-to-day running of classes across the school and take the lead in the absence of a Class teacher.
  8. Select and adapt appropriate resources/methods to facilitate agreed learning activities.
  9. Reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  10. Take an active role in key areas of responsibility across the school including displays and organising resources.
  11. Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested.
  12. Contribute to the community life of the school by taking an active part in the preparation and celebration of both community and multi-cultural events.

Skills
  1. Higher Level Teaching Assistant must have experience working with mental health problems and complex SEN needs.
  2. This school believes that all young people should be provided with appropriate education in a safe, stable, containing learning environment.
  3. Higher Level Teaching Assistant will be working with secondary aged pupils who have SEMD, SEBD troubled behaviour. Some students are academic and they range from KS2 - KS4.
  4. Higher Level Teaching Assistant are given opportunities to succeed through the use of highly personalised individual education plans to help support their students.
  5. The Therapeutic Education Department works closely with the nurses, doctors, and therapists at the centre and with a wide range of professionals in the community.
  6. This role starts ASAP.
  7. Higher Level Teaching Assistant will need excellent behaviour management skills.
  8. Be able to build positive relationships with young people and staff.
  9. Higher Level Teaching Assistant needs to be able to teach/cover a range of lessons when needed.
  10. Good knowledge/experience working with children with SEMH within a Special needs environment.
  11. Higher Level Teaching Assistant will need experience working with secondary aged pupils.
  12. Higher Level Teaching Assistant will be collaborating with the classroom teacher to define appropriate activities for the pupils in relation to the curriculum.
  13. Assessing children who have long or short-term learning difficulties and working with colleagues to identify individual pupils' special needs.
  14. Liaising with other professionals, such as social workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, and educational psychologists.
