Heath & Safety Governance and Assurance Lead for Fleet and Road Safety

Competitive salary, £4,800 Car allowance or £4,300 cash equivalent, plus healthcare, 18% annual bonus potential with 27.5 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days after 10 years' service and a company pension scheme with highly competitive contribution rates.

Location: This is a national working role with travel at short notice. You will visit Royal Mail Group sites including regular team meetings in our London Farringdon office. The role requires flexibility in line with business needs.

This role is crucial in ensuring the safety of our drivers and fleet operations and improving our safety performance.

About the role

Reporting directly to the Head of H&S Governance and Assurance, as the Fleet and Road Safety H&S Governance and Assurance Lead, you will:

  1. Provide expert safety support and advice across RMG regarding occupational road risk.
  2. Lead the development and deployment of consistent safety approaches to enhance safety performance.
  3. Oversee Road Traffic Risk Management Standards and develop programs to minimize risk.
  4. Analyse performance data to identify priority risk issues for road safety.
  5. Contribute to Board and Executive performance reports and business risk profiling.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor changes in H&S legislation related to road and fleet safety.
  2. Represent RMG in external forums and government consultations.
  3. Benchmark performance and establish RMG-led Road Safety Forums.
  4. Assess transformation projects impacting road safety and advise on risk controls.
  5. Support the Field Safety team in investigating high-impact collisions and fleet issues.
  6. Develop and deploy road safety risk reduction programs within the safety strategy.
  7. Provide expert advice to Safety Field Team, Operations, and Business Functions.
  8. Raise the visibility and profile of road safety across all levels of the organization.
  9. Advise on effective instructor-led driver training for car and van drivers.
  10. Collaborate with RMG legal and Claims team to understand risk profiles and reduce financial impact.
  11. Provide technical support to the field safety team for fleet workshops.

About You

We are looking for a candidate with the following skills, experience, and industry qualifications:

  1. Able to identify and manage significant risks, make effective decisions based on the analysis of appropriate data and knows when to employ additional or specific expertise resources.
  2. Detailed understanding of fleet workshops and associated risks.
  3. Exceptional knowledge of road and fleet related safety health & environment legislation.
  4. Proactive in approach, deals confidently with competing demands.
  5. Able to build effective working relationship with colleagues at all levels in a large organisation, and to engage with key stakeholders.

Experience:

  1. Previous experience in a senior management position with a focus on road and fleet risk management.
  2. Ability to challenge and influence management teams to drive safety performance improvement.
  3. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to train and coach effectively.
  4. Commitment to professional development and maintaining required levels of specialism.

Qualifications:

  1. Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner qualification or NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent).
  2. Certified Member of the Institution of Safety and Health or equivalent professional safety body.
