The Health Care Complex is a busy, friendly GP practice based in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham serving approximately 4500 patients. We are looking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic, motivated, hardworking Healthcare Assistant. Candidates should be ambitious and eager to learn new skills, and preferably have 12 months experience working as a HCA in a GP practice. They must be qualified in phlebotomy.
Main duties of the job
The job will involve standard duties of a healthcare assistant such as taking bloods and chronic disease management. There are a range of extra duties HCAs are able to undertake and additional experience will be an advantage particularly in respect of immunisations with training provided in other areas.

Job responsibilities
Working under the direct supervision of the practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform ECGs and have a clear understanding of the protocol and maintenance of the machine.
- Blood pressure monitoring.
- Blood glucose monitoring.
- Perform annual Spirometry tests and any new referrals which includes a reversibility test using a PSD under the direction of the Nurse.
- Calibration of Spirometer syringe and its maintenance. Documentation to support maintenance.
- Chaperoning duties.
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses.
- Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment.
- Daily refrigerator temperature checks and documentation and the understanding of what to do in a fridge failure.
- Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation.
- Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms.
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.
- Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and well-being.
- Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted.
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being.
- Maintain high standards of documentation, accurate patients records, and statistics in line with contract requirements.

- Attendance at Practice/Nurse/Doctors/Team meetings as appropriate.

- Taking of wound swabs after discussion with Practice Nurse.

- Record changes in patients' observations which must be reported and acted upon.
- Be aware of accurate use of appointment times for appropriate tests.
- Time Management.
- The skill of venepuncture and management of adult patients' blood tests as referred by Doctor, Nurse and hospital in line with requests, local and national guidelines.
- Taking of bloods of children under 16 but over 12 years of good build and after liaison with the Nurse.
- Arrange meetings with relevant representatives for wound care and tissue management.
- Arrange DMARD bloods according to patients' care plans using a robust call and recall system.
- Calibration of INR monitor in line with National NEQUAS guidelines.
- Arrange annual gestational diabetes blood sugar tests using a robust call and recall system.
- Responsible for health promotion displays in the Treatment Room and Surgery.
- Assists in Clinical audit as required.
- Has a basic knowledge of the needs of the patient and practice according to guidelines and constraints within the GP contract.
