Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health Physicist or Radiation Projection Engineer.


As Lead Health Physicist, you’ll be working on a project to establish and operate a significant new research and development cell for an MTC customer. Working with the compliance lead, RPA and RWA, you’ll be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a radiation protection and low-level radioactive waste management system for the cell.


Once the cell is operational, you’ll manage the day-to-day health physics activities including managing a small team of technicians.


This position will suit an experienced health physicist or radiation protection engineer and may be working towards being a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), Radiation Waste Advisor (RWA) or senior HS&E advisor.


You’ll be responsible for:
  1. Supporting the development and implementation of a radiation protection and low-level radioactive waste management system for the cell, including operational risk and dose minimisation, engineering controls, design features, safety features, warning devices and waste processing/disposal.
  2. Supporting the generation of management processes and procedures to ensure the safe operation of plant for staff, the public and the environment.
  3. Supporting the planning of responding to emergency or contingency procedures for responding to radiation incidents.
  4. Liaising with plant management and project teams on matters of radiation safety and legislation.
  5. Making recommendations on methods and equipment for radiation protection during work with plant processes and equipment, including dosimetry requirements.
  6. The calibration of detectors and monitoring equipment as required.
  7. Mentoring, coaching and supporting staff training in radiation protection and waste management.

Who we’re looking for:

We’re looking for somebody with substantial experience of health physics, radiation protection and waste management.


You’ll also have:
  1. Good working knowledge of IRR17.
  2. The ability to work collaboratively with adjacent themes e.g. safety, environment, sustainability and supply chain.
  3. Good communication, listening, decision making and influencing skills to audiences ranging from senior managers, project delivery teams and operational staff.
  4. The ability to use data to support recommended actions.
  5. Chartered Membership of Society for Radiological Protection (or working towards).

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
  1. Working towards or current RPA or RWA status approved by a relevant awarding body.
  2. Scientific or Engineering Degree or related discipline equivalent or the ability to demonstrate performance and experience at an equivalent professional level.
  3. Knowledge and/or experience of the generation of nuclear plant Safety Cases.
