Job description

As a Health Care Support Worker/Phlebotomist, you will provide essential support to our clinical team, assisting in the delivery of patient care and helping to ensure the smooth running of the practice. This role will involve direct patient care, administrative duties, and the opportunity to develop your skills in a dynamic, patient-focused environment.

In this role, you will directly contribute to the well-being of our patients, assisting our clinical team with a wide range of essential tasks. From taking blood samples as a phlebotomist to providing compassionate hands-on care, your contributions will have a direct impact on patient outcomes. You will also play a vital role in maintaining the administrative functions of the practice, ensuring the effective management of patient information and supporting the practice's operations.

Main duties of the job
  1. Assist the clinical team in providing high-quality care, including recording vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate).
  2. Perform phlebotomy as required.
  3. Support patients during appointments, procedures, and health checks.
  4. Prepare and assist patients for minor procedures under clinical guidance.
  5. Collect specimens (e.g., urine, blood) ensuring proper handling and documentation.
  6. Assist patients with mobility needs and support elderly/disabled patients.
  7. Manage patient records confidentially using practice management software (e.g., Vision / EMIS).
  8. Maintain, clean, and sterilize clinical equipment.
  9. Assist with medical supplies stock control, including ordering and checking levels.
  10. Collaborate with GPs, nurses, and staff to ensure efficient practice operation.
  11. Maintain a clean, safe working environment, adhering to infection control and health and safety guidelines.
  12. Ensure the practice is welcoming, offering emotional support when needed.
  13. Provide relevant health information on lifestyle changes, preventive care, and health topics.
  14. Support health education initiatives and assist with organizing health campaigns and services.
  15. Participate in CPD and relevant training.
  16. Undertake additional duties to support the clinical team.

Job responsibilities

Patient Care Support:

  1. Assist the clinical team in providing high-quality care for patients, including taking and recording vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate).
  2. Perform phlebotomy (blood collection) as required.
  3. Prepare and assist patients for minor procedures and treatments under the guidance of clinical staff.
  4. Provide assistance with the collection of specimens (e.g., urine, blood, etc.), ensuring proper handling and documentation.
  5. Help patients with mobility needs and provide support for elderly or disabled patients where required.

Clinical Administration:

  1. Assist with patient registration and manage patient records in a confidential and organized manner using practice management software (e.g. Vision / EMIS).
  2. Ensure that clinical equipment is maintained, cleaned, and sterilized as required.
  3. Assist with the stock control of medical supplies, including ordering and checking stock levels.

General Practice Support:

  1. Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure the practice runs efficiently.
  2. Assist in maintaining a clean and safe working environment, adhering to infection control and health and safety guidelines.
  3. Ensure the practice is welcoming and patient-friendly, offering emotional support where needed.

Health Promotion:

  1. Provide patients with relevant information on health topics, lifestyle changes, and preventive care.
  2. Support health education initiatives within the practice, including helping with the organization of health campaigns and services.

Training & Development:

  1. Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) and attend training sessions relevant to the role.
  2. Undertake any other duties as required by the practice to support the clinical team.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Good general level of education.
Experience
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Communication skills: Ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Empathy and compassion: A caring and patient-centered approach.
  • Ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not essential.
