Health Care Assistant - William Brown Centre

The post holder works under indirectsupervision of the practice nurse team leader and undertakes task and dutiesdelegated by the practice nurse team leader or a suitably qualified regulated professional.They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needsof patients, following policy and procedures can provide supervision to practicephlebotomist as required.

Main duties of the job

Communication

Communicate effectively with other team members

Communicate effectively with patients and carers,recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication

Personaland people developmen

Takeresponsibility for own developmental learning and performance

Takeresponsibility for maintaining a record of own personal development

Work withmanagement on any new training requirements

Torecognise and understand the roles and responsibilities of individualsworking in the primary health care team

Be awareof the legal issues pertinent to the role of a basic HCA (level 1)

Health, Safety and security

Use and encourage others to be familiar with thepersonal security systems within the workplace according to practiceguidelines

Identify the risks involved in work activities andundertake them in a way that manages the risks

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the HCA
  • Willing to develop clinical skills and competency relevant to the role e.g. phlebotomy skills
  • Manual dexterity and manipulation skills
  • Ability to handle simple medical equipment e.g. ECG machine
  • Fitness to do the job within manual-handing policy
  • Able to communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Ability to communicate effectively via telephone or group discussion
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Participate in the care of equipment
  • Undertake stock control
  • Must either be Hepatitis B immune or be willing to undergo an immunisation course
  • Reliable
  • Understand issues regarding accountability
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the data protection act and patient confidentiality, clinical and information governance and Caldicott requirements.

Experience

  • Has customer care experience or experience of being a carer.
  • Experience of working unsupervised.
  • Willingness to complete NVQ 2 or 3 in a related subject.

Qualifications

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Basic computer experience
  • Have the Care certificate or willing to undertake it.
  • Experience in phlebotomy.
  • Willingness to undertake an NVQ or an equivalent qualification
