Job description

37 hours per week (hybrid working)

Located in the heart of Hertfordshire, the borough of Welwyn Hatfield lies between central London and Cambridge, with easy access to both. Home to the University of Hertfordshire and the headquarters of two FTSE 100 companies (Tesco and Ocado) along with other industry leaders in research, science and logistics, its economic potential is huge.

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced Health and Safety Manager to lead the Council’s Health and Safety, Resilience and Business Continuity functions. You will lead on all health and safety matters relating to council buildings and the safe working practices of employees and contractors, enabling the Council to fulfil its statutory obligations with regard to the health, safety and wellbeing of all staff, service users and all those affected by the Council’s undertaking. You will be the Council’s lead advisor on contingency planning and organisational resilience to meet our statutory obligations under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and lead internal business continuity for the Council.

You will hold the NEBOSH National Diploma (Level 6) in Occupational Health and Safety or similar, with a high level of knowledge and experience in health and safety and a proven track record of achievement working at a senior level in a local authority or similar related organisation. You will have knowledge of major emergency plans and responses (Civil Contingencies Act) and business continuity for organisations.

To be successful, you must possess an inner confidence when engaging with service managers, developed communication skills, good judgement and the ability to work under pressure, establish priorities and deliver to deadlines. A positive attitude is a must, as the successful candidate will be expected to assist with developing a great safety culture throughout the Council.
