We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Health and Safety Advisor who can work in the Schools Risk Management team, helping to support teams in Children, Families and Lifelong Learning undertake their health and safety duties and responsibilities.

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Health and Safety Advisor to join our team. You will play a crucial role in managing and monitoring health and safety across the Children, Families and Lifelong Learning directorate, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and promoting a positive health and safety culture.

You will be based within the Schools Risk Management team, which supports the work of children's services as well as wider education including schools and adult learning. The team work collaboratively with other health and safety advisors across the Council as part of the Health and Safety team, to promote safe working practices and high standards.

This role is open to hybrid working meaning you are required in the office/on site usually 2 days a week. You may wish to work from home or any of our council offices most of the time, whilst also being able to visit our customers across the county, therefore the ability to drive and have access to a vehicle is important. In support of our people and our greener futures strategies, we'd welcome a conversation with the successful candidate on what hybrid working may look like for you.

As a Health and Safety Advisor you will carry out health and safety audits, monitoring visits, accident investigations and the monitoring of accident reports. You will provide advice to managers on a day-to-day basis on a range of health and safety issues. You will also be involved in project work such as developing and delivering health and safety training, health and safety campaigns, implementation of the Council's health and safety management system and updating directorate policies and documentation.

Displaying great interpersonal skills and integrity, you will be able to build positive working relationships, whilst working collaboratively with internal and external customers. You will need to be patient and resilient and, above all, you will be passionate about delivering excellent service.

Reporting directly to the Senior Health and Safety Advisor, you'll join a small team supporting managers and staff across the directorate in understanding their part in workplace health and safety. You'll be someone who understands the value of teamwork, who can work as part of a team or on their own and is innovative and adaptable to change.

Shortlisting Criteria

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent, in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body, with a willingness to work towards the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Cert membership
  • Good knowledge and understanding of hazards, risks and control measures that can be applied to a broad range of service areas
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety auditing and/or inspections
  • Ability to develop and deliver training.
  • Able to understand, meet and exceed customer and stakeholder expectations, displaying professional integrity, respect, confidentiality and understand political sensitivities.
