Health and Safety Advisor

Location: Brighton

Salary: £29,000 - £32,000 per annum will be offered to reflect the agreed working weeks.

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Health and Safety Advisor

Main purpose of the role: The post-holder will help coordinate, facilitate, manage, train, and promote the continual improvement of Health and Safety awareness within the College. The successful candidate will be keen to develop their Health and Safety experience in a challenging and high-performing environment, with the potential to take on additional responsibilities and career progression.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Undertake internal and external property inspections around college estate as per the H&S Inspection Programme - to include Fire Safety inspections (Fire Door inspections, Fire Risk Assessments) and boarding accommodation.
  2. Regularly assist with traffic and pedestrian safety management support around estate - dealing and communicating with the residents, the community and stakeholders.
  3. Coordinate with current contractors and source new ones to schedule, arrange, and oversee both regular and reactive maintenance work.
  4. Chaperoning contractors onsite who are not DBS registered.
  5. Administration support such as minute taking, scanning documents, photocopying, answering phones and responding to emails.
  6. Coordinating all DSE assessments and follow up actions with staff.
  7. Organise and communicate with necessary department heads regarding the annual Health and Safety staff practical training programme - ensuring excellent course attendance, participation, engagement and feedback.
  8. Manage the Health and Safety E-learning training database & matrix (iHASCO).
  9. Responsible for the compiling, interpretation and dissemination of the termly accident report.
  10. Assist the Deputy Head of H&S with the on-going risk assessment annual review cycle and feedback.
  11. Assist the Deputy Head of H&S with the annual policy review cycle, ensuring that such policies are accurate and reflective of operations.
  12. Manage CoSHH and administration - research the possibility of introducing software to assist with this.
  13. Responsibility and accountability for writing and reviewing risk assessments.
  14. Propose, and with the agreement of the Deputy Head of H&S, implement changes to working practices and policies to comply with legislation.
  15. Provide enhanced/advisor level Health and Safety advice & guidance to colleagues and Heads of Department in accordance with current legislation - being confident and assured with such advice.
  16. Procurement and monitoring of Health and Safety equipment and supplies.
  17. Maintenance and up-keep of Health and Safety notices/signage.
  18. Health and Safety record keeping and report writing including accident and incident investigations.
  19. Defects reporting on specific software and corrective action (Flow 360).
  20. Attend and chair meetings in the absence of the Deputy Head of H&S.
  21. Carry out new and expectant mother risk assessments and follow up actions.
  22. Be highly visible and involved around college.
  23. Undertake research on areas at the request of the Head of H&S and Security and/or the Deputy Head H&S.
  24. Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Deputy Head of H&S or the Head of H&S and Security.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  1. Demonstrate a good knowledge of safe working practices.
  2. Experience of working on own initiative and effectively prioritising a busy and demanding workload.
  3. Knowledge of the principles and application of GDPR.
  4. Full driving licence - to travel around the College estate.
  5. Excellent written and spoken communication skills e.g. the ability to adapt communication according to setting or person.
  6. Energetic and positive approach to work.
  7. Solution focused.
  8. Ability to make things happen - comfortable with enforcing/ re-enforcing rules and conflict resolution.
  9. Excellent diplomatic and listening skills but ability to be assertive and robust when required.
  10. Innovative with the ability to think out of the box.
  11. Experience of working in an environment where the principles and application of Safeguarding are paramount.

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate will either have completed training or be willing to undergo training in the following areas:

  1. Educated to Level 3 qualification or equivalent, ideally in a relevant subject e.g. Health and Safety (Nebosh Certificate or Diploma, Nebosh certificate in Fire Safety, conducting fire risk assessments, fire door inspections, property management, business administration).
  2. IOSH Qualification and IOSH accreditation.

Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break (37.5 hours per week). Occasionally, there may be a need to work outside of regular working hours, including weekends, to support events such as Open Mornings, as required.

Remuneration:

A salary in the range of £29,000 - £32,000 will be offered to reflect the agreed working weeks.

Holidays:

23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
