Job description

Head of Treasury - Northern Gas Networks

Marks Sattin are delighted to be exclusively working in partnership with Northern Gas Networks to recruit a Head of Treasury in Leeds.

The role will be to ensure that NGN has ongoing access to enduring, cost-effective debt finance to meet its obligations, to optimise funding costs (finance charges) within approved policy with the aim of delivering outperformance against the regulatory cost of debt allowance and to manage other financial risks including liquidity, credit, currency, operational and inflation.

The requirements of the role is 3 times a week is Based in Thorpe Park in Leeds with excellent facilities and on site parking.

Joining a Finance team of 30 and Reporting to the Finance Director the duties will include:

  • Ensuring that NGN maintains a strong investment grade credit rating.
  • Taking steps to ensure that interest charges and other funding costs are covered by the regulatory cost of debt allowance including developing and delivering an appropriate interest rate hedging strategy.
  • Maintaining sufficient surplus cash and debt facility headroom to fund operations and network investment and pay tax, interest and shareholder return.
  • Leading on raising of new debt to support the business's strategic objectives.
  • Maintaining strong ongoing relationships with key financial stakeholders (e.g. lending and other banks, credit rating agencies and debt holders).
  • Providing assurance to the NGN Treasury Committee and Board on Treasury positions and performance and developing / proposing strategies around all Treasury matters including systems, banking partners, credit rating agencies, funding sources and investor relations.
  • Oversee the maintenance of a robust regime of compliance and accurate, timely reporting.
  • Keeping abreast of regulatory developments.
  • Providing coaching support for, and oversight of the activities of, the Treasury Manager and other members of the Finance team and providing wider specialist support and education to the business.
Role Stakeholders

Lending and other relationship banks, credit rating agencies, bondholders and noteholders, other financial stakeholders (e.g. bond guarantor, bond trustees, paying agents, financial advisors / consultants), Board, Treasury Committee and shareholder finance personnel, auditors (internal and external), wider finance department & wider NGN business including regulation department and senior management.

Formal Qualifications Required:

A treasury and / or accounting qualification (e.g.FCT, AMCT, ACA, ACCA).

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How Required for the Role:
  • Raising debt in bank, bond and private placement markets including negotiating commercial and documentary terms (essential).
  • Planning and executing interest rate hedging strategies (essential).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external stakeholders and senior management and at board level including explaining complex financial concepts to non-finance people (essential).
  • Financial risk management (interest rate, inflation, foreign exchange, credit, refinancing and liquidity risk) (essential).
  • Knowledge of the workings of financial markets and economics including the dynamics of interest rates and inflation (essential).
  • Accounting for financial instruments (desirable).
  • Knowledge of regulation of UK utilities, in particular cost of debt and cost of equity allowances and financeability (desirable).
