Leading, supporting and enabling TfL’s operational teams to achieve our ambitious safety, health and environmental goals.

About us

Transport for London plays a key role in shaping life in London. Our transport infrastructure and public transport network is admired around the world. We are changing London for the future – making it one of the best cities to live, work and visit.

Our purpose is to move London forward safely, inclusively and sustainably – this is why we exist. Our vision is to be the strong, green heartbeat for London and this role is integral to achieve these aims. Our passion to create a fairer, greener, healthier and prosperous city is ambitious. By 2041, we aim to make 80 per cent of all journeys by foot, cycle, or public transport.

These exciting programmes are delivered through our healthy streets and healthy people strategy, making walking for travel at its heart, improving air quality, safe and inclusive travel and fewer car trips.

About the roles

As the Head of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) you will lead on advising, supporting and holding to account the SHE performance of our delivery teams.

We are advertising two roles:

  1. Role 1. Head of Safety, Health & Environment: TfL Operations: Rail - leading the SHE teams which support London Underground, the Elizabeth line, Docklands Light Railways, London Overground and London Trams.
  2. Role 2. Head of Safety, Health & Environment: TfL Bus, Sponsored Services, Network Management and Customer & Strategy - leading the SHE teams which support our London Bus Operations, our Corporate Services functions, our commercial development team and key contracted services, including cycle hire, cable car and micro mobility teams.

You’ll report into our Director of SHE TfL Operations leading a well-established Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) team of up to 33 SHE professionals. You will drive and support the safe and sustainable operation of TfL’s public transport operations and help TfL achieve our ambitious safety, health and environmental goals.

As Head of Safety, Health and Environment, you’ll partner and advise the business on how to improve its safety, environment and wellbeing performance through coaching, guidance, assurance and broader improvement support. Alongside this, you will support the business to embed a sustainable safety culture and encourage progress towards our goal, Vision Zero: to eliminate death or serious injury on our transport network by 2041.

As well as close working with TfL’s public transport delivery teams, you will work closely with the Chief Officers for SHE, People, Finance, General Counsel, Customer and Strategy and their teams. You will work closely with our SHE regulators and key external stakeholders, including the Office of Rail and Road, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Greater London Authority (GLA). Your ability to develop impactful relationships to enable you to assure and influence stakeholders will be critical in succeeding in this role.

Making London a healthier place to live, work and visit is a huge responsibility – we do this by making sure we influence city planning London-wide policy as well as challenging all activities across our portfolios to improve on our corporate environment performance.

Ideally, you’ll have experience of public transport safety, looking to take your next step into a more strategically aligned role.

We are looking for a strong leader who can inspire, motivate and develop their own team of SHE professionals as well as inspire and motivate colleagues across TfL delivery teams to further improve safety, health and environmental performance (essential). You’ll have a strongly grounded understanding of health, safety and environment and proven experience of leading on safety, health and environment in complex organisations operating in a politically sensitive environment.

You will hold a NEBOSH diploma or equivalent experience (essential). Membership of relevant professional body e.g. IOSH, IEMA, CIBSE is desirable. A copy of your qualification will be requested if you are shortlisted for the role.
