Head of Operations – Port of Tyne
Location: South Shields
Reporting to: Operations Director

Jackson Hogg is proud to be supporting the Port of Tyne in their search for a Head of Operations. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead and develop a high-performing operations team, ensuring the efficient, safe, and cost-effective handling, storage, and transport of cargo and passengers.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and develop a vision for cargo and passenger handling, storage, and transportation, ensuring high standards in operational efficiency, customer service, and health & safety.
  2. Manage and oversee operational teams across Bulk Cargo, Transport, Cruise & Ferries, Warehousing, Containers, Resource Planning, and Training & Compliance.
  3. Drive cultural and operational change to align with the Port’s strategic plan and objectives.
  4. Develop and implement flexible working arrangements, ensuring employee performance and development align with business goals.
  5. Manage recruitment, selection, absence management, and disciplinary procedures.
  6. Maintain strong relationships with Trade Unions and Employee Representatives to enhance communication and engagement.
  7. Continuously review and implement operational improvements, including technological solutions.
  8. Manage budgets and forecasts, ensuring expenditure aligns with financial protocols.
  9. Support business development by fostering strong relationships with existing and potential customers to maximise commercial opportunities.
  10. Identify, manage, and mitigate business risks within areas of responsibility.
  11. Ensure consistent application of Quality Management Systems.

Essential Experience & Skills:

  1. Extensive people management experience with a proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate teams in an operational environment.
  2. Strong track record in managing change and driving process improvements.
  3. Proven experience in health & safety management, business & operational planning, environmental management, and project management.
  4. High-level negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  5. Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and financial control.
  6. Ability to build and maintain effective relationships both internally and externally.
  7. Organisational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Desirable Experience & Skills:

  1. Experience managing operations within a port or similar logistics environment.
  2. Background working within a unionised environment.
  3. An appreciation of strategic business issues.

Leadership & Organisational Impact:

  1. Leads a multi-functional department, providing motivation, technical expertise, and strategic direction.
  2. Drives innovation and continuous improvement across operational processes.
  3. Influences internal and external stakeholders to negotiate and align objectives.
  4. Holds budget accountability and plays a key role in financial decision-making.

  1. Lead by example in promoting a strong health & safety culture.
  2. Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and regulations.
  3. Take proactive steps to identify and mitigate workplace risks.
