MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the Head of Department involve providing professional leadership and management for a subject area to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources, and improved standards of learning and achievement for all pupils within the context of the school’s overall aims and policies.
CURRICULUM
- Develop and implement policies and practices.
- Create and maintain a climate of positive attitudes and confidence in teaching.
- Establish shared understanding of the importance and role of the subject area.
- Identify and plan for supporting underachieving pupils.
- Analyse and interpret appropriate data, research, and inspection evidence and take appropriate action.
- Establish short, medium, and long-term plans for development and resourcing of the subject.
- Monitor Action Plans and targets and evaluate these to inform further development.
- Contribute to the School Development Plan and its implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Teaching and managing staff to provide support, challenge, information, and development necessary to sustain motivation and secure improvement in teaching:
- Help staff achieve constructive working relationships with pupils.
- Establish expectations and constructive working relationships amongst staff.
- Sustain motivation of themselves and colleagues.
- Appraise staff in the context of PRSD.
- Audit in-service needs for the department in the context of the school Staff Development Policy and School Development Plan.
- Contribute to IEPs after taking into consideration the results of standardised tests and the class teacher’s contribution.
Support Early Career Teachers by providing:
- Departmental Policy, Schemes of Work, and advice on their implementation.
- Advice on short, medium, and long-term planning.
- Advice and support on the availability and use of resources.
- Guidance on assessment and record keeping.
- Support and advice on classroom management issues.
- Assistance in developing and implementing Induction and EPD Action Plans.
- Monitor and evaluate progress and provide feedback to Early Career Teacher and the Teacher-tutor.
- Continue the development and refinement of teaching approaches and strategies necessary for an effective practitioner.
- Assist the Early Career Teacher in the analysis of difficulties which may be encountered.
ADMINISTRATION
Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources:
- Establish and advise on all resource needs, requisition, and allocate subject resources efficiently.
- Ensure effective and efficient management and organisation of learning resources including ICT.
- Maintain existing resources and explore opportunities to develop and incorporate new ones.
- Use accommodation to create a stimulating environment.
- Ensure a safe working and learning environment.
- Allocate classes.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
To secure and sustain effective teaching of the subject:
- Evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupils’ achievements and set targets for improvement.
- Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity, and progression for all pupils.
- Ensure teachers understand and communicate objectives and sequence of teaching and learning.
- Provide guidance on teaching and learning methods to meet pupil and subject needs, liaising with SENCO as appropriate.
- Ensure development of literacy, numeracy, and ICT skills through the subject.
- Establish and implement policies and practices for assessing, recording, and reporting.
- Regularly monitor at Departmental meetings the quality and assessment of pupils’ work.
- Ensure assessment on pupils’ achievement is used to secure progress.
- Set expectations for staff and pupils and evaluate progress and achievement of pupils.
- Evaluate teaching, identify good practice, and act to improve the quality of teaching.
- Ensure development of pupils’ individual study skills.
- Ensure teachers are aware of the subject’s contribution to pupils’ understanding of citizenship.
- Help to establish partnership and involvement of parents.
- Develop links with the community, business, and industry where appropriate.
SCHOOL ETHOS
Promote positive relations amongst staff and assist the Principal and Governors in maintaining the reputation of the school, its progress, and public image.
1) Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require.
2) Exercise of particular duties
A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with directions which may be reasonably given to him/her by the principal, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
1. Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere.
- Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
2. General
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to him/her.
- Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
- Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
- Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils.
- Communicating and co-operating with such persons or bodies outside the school as may be approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
3. Assessment/Reporting
Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.
4. Staff Development/Professional Development
- Participating, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
- Reviewing from time to time his/her methods of teaching and programmes of work.
- Advising and co-operating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching, and assessment.
5. Discipline/Health and Safety
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguarding their health and safety.
- Participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school.
6. Public Examinations
Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations.
7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
- Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers.
- Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
- Taking part in the review, development, and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions of the school.
8. Number of days/Hours of work
- A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year.
- A teacher shall be available to perform such duties at such times and such places as may reasonably be specified by the Principal.
- A teacher may not be required to teach for more than 25 hours in any week in a primary or special school and 23.5 hours in any week in a secondary school.
- All teachers shall be required to have a break of at least 30 minutes between the hours of 12 noon and 2.00 pm.
9. Staff cover
Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available provided that:
- A teacher shall not be required to provide such cover after the second day on which a teacher is absent.
