Your new company

Hays Accountancy and Finance are partnering exclusively with West Mercia Women's Aid to recruit a dynamic and hands-on Head of Finance. Offering remote working with a presence required two days per month within their Hereford, Herefordshire Office, this is an exciting opportunity reporting directly to the Chief Executive as a member of the Leadership Team. You will provide consistent, robust, and accurate advice to the Board of Trustees and Chief Executive, managing a small Finance team to ensure effective financial management of the charity. This is a great opportunity to really make a difference, add value and support further growth. The position is open to qualified/part-qualified or qualified by experience financial professionals who are passionate about joining a charity with some interesting future growth projects.

Your new role

Your key duties will involve:

  1. Advising the CEO & Board regarding budgets/forecasting linked to strategic plans.
  2. Preparing/analysing management accounts and budgets.
  3. Statutory accounts preparation including financial year-end.
  4. Providing financial data for reports to funders.
  5. Overseeing the fixed asset register, ensuring depreciation calculations, write-offs and impairments are completed.
  6. Monthly balance sheet preparation and reconciliations of all banking transactions.
  7. Ensuring accuracy in tax calculations including gift aid payments.
  8. Preparing/submitting statutory returns and leading the management of the external audit.
  9. Drafting annual accounts and ensuring maximisation of income from contracts, grants, fund-raising and charges through timely invoicing and credit control.
  10. Administering purchasing and overseeing the delivery of all payroll/pension processes and cash administration.
  11. Providing advice/support to the Senior Leadership Team on all financial processes, systems, and controls.
  12. Managing and supporting a small accounting team, implementing/improving processes/systems as the organisation grows, and being involved in ad-hoc projects/duties.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this permanent Head of Finance position, you will need:

  1. Experience in a similar role, qualified/part-qualified CIPFA/CIMA/ACCA/ACA or qualified by experience.
  2. Strong communication skills to partner at all levels, both internally/externally, and with non-financial management.
  3. A passion for supporting organisational growth, suggesting/implementing processes, along with being very adaptable to organisational needs.
  4. Experience with year-end statutory accounts preparation, budget monitoring and forecasting.
  5. Strong MS Excel skills and knowledge of financial systems.
  6. The ability to meet deadlines and manage workloads, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  7. Some experience supervising or managing a small accounting team with a hands-on approach.
  8. Experience with Sage financial systems, the charity sector and strategic business planning would be advantageous but not essential.
