Superior Recruitment Group have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Civil/ Structural Engineering to join their large client in Adlington or Sunderland.


The purpose of the Head of Civil/ Structural Engineering role is to be ultimately responsible for the delivery of Civil/ Structural engineering scope across projects, studies, and bids; this includes ensuring designs meet the highest standards with regards to safety, code compliance, scope alignment, quality, cost, and on-time delivery. In this role you will promote structural efficiency, cost optimisation, and quality of output, through resource management and acting as a business subject matter expert. This is a functional role with management and occasional customer facing responsibilities.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  1. Wholly accountable for the quality of Civil/ Structural engineering output, and on-time delivery in accordance with project requirements.
  2. Ensure all Civil/ Structural designs are code compliant, meet specification, safe in design, and consider lifecycle requirements.
  3. Support Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Bids with information and guidance.
  4. Work closely with other Department Heads in the business to ensure synergy.
  5. Promote Civil/ Structural/ equipment standardisation and re-use.
  6. Line management responsibilities and duties across multiple sites; responsible for departmental performance and setting objectives to meet business and individual goals.
  7. Development of Civil/ Structural engineering tools and processes that ensure designs are robust and outputs in line with scope.
  8. Checking and Approval of Civil/ Structural calculations, reports, and analytical models to ensure compliance with scope (as provided by Project Engineer).
  9. Support CAT 2/ CAT 3 checking requirements with supplementary information as required.
  10. Attend sites to conduct site and/or condition surveys and prepare reports on findings thereafter.
  11. Attend project model/ design reviews as required, supporting discussions on Civil/ Structural efficiency, interfacing, and tolerancing where applicable.
  12. Attend client meetings as requested by the Project Engineer/ Project Manager.
  13. Exercise and promote cost reduction, value engineering, standardisation, risk reduction, and a right first-time approach throughout all work scopes.
  14. Participate in lessons learned meetings and apply continuous improvement.
  15. Responsible for the rectification and long-term preventative measures resulting from any departmental NCR.
  16. Support bids/ proposals with steel weights, configurations, engineering time, and concept designs as requested.
  17. Identify suitable sub-contractor supply chain assessing competence to perform scopes. Responsible for verifying sub-contractor output is correct in accordance with scope provided by Project Engineering.
  18. Set controls and monitor departmental performance against KPIs.
  19. Driven to reduce Engineering lead times, improve quality and accuracy, and reduce costs without compromising on safety. Commitment to driving continuous improvement, and a culture of accountability.
  20. Responsible for the definition, adherence, and continual review of all ISO 9001 procedures and templates relating to discipline. Support internal/ external audits as required.
  21. Deliver works in alignment with the business' ISO 9001 processes and templates as controlled within the Quality Management System (COS).
  22. Engage with the quarterly 1-2-1 process and take actions to address areas for improvement.
  23. Ensure personal objectives are completed in a timely manner and drive overall departmental/ business objectives year-on-year.
  24. Maintain alignment with company values and vision.
  25. Any other ad hoc duties as may be required, and as commensurate with the grade of post.

Education & Experience
  1. BEng (Hons) in Engineering (preferably Civil or Structural)
  2. Chartered Engineer (CEng, preferably ICE or IStructE)
  3. Strong experience in a Civil/ Structural engineering field.
  4. Knowledge of the construction & process industries and applicable standards.
  5. Ability to use structural analytical software unaided (STAAD Pro or TEKLA Structures preferred).
  6. Ability to interpret Site Investigation reports and identify civil implications.
  7. Understanding of load cases and combinations, and ability to deduce that structures are behaving as intended through calculation or analysis.
  8. Experience of managing teams to meet expectations in a project delivery environment.
  9. Highly organised and able to prioritise workload in a multidisciplinary environment.
  10. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality performance/ output.
  11. Strong written and verbal communicator with internal and external customers alike, with good presentation skills.
  12. Completed the required company induction into this role.
