Job Introduction

The Head of Audio and Events will inspire creative leadership and strategic vision for BBC Scotland's Audio and Events portfolio, to create distinctive programming. They will lead the process of forming and continually re-invigorating content, priorities, style, tone and presentation to deliver a distinctive schedule along with a digital proposition that serves the particular audience needs and behaviours. The successful candidate will be expected to play a full part in BBC Scotland's wider leadership team helping to shape the vision and strategy for the department, serving Scottish audiences and enhancing Scotland's role in the wider BBC mission.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Creative, editorial and financial leadership of the Radio Scotland linear and digital brands
  2. Define and lead the execution of the audience and growth strategy for all of our audio products
  3. Drive maximum value through the delivery of a clear strategy for Radio Scotland and all audio platforms, working with audiences and marketing teams to reach new audiences and grow loyalty and valued habit with existing ones
  4. Develop new formats and innovate as the industry changes to meet audience needs
  5. Commission distinctive new content for linear and digital audiences
  6. Lead team making innovative multi-platform content showcasing Scotland's cultural and music events
  7. Develop good relationships with Sounds to deliver content in line with their broader strategy
  8. Nurture and develop new talent in line with broader BBC Scotland talent strategy
  9. Lead relationships with existing presenting talent, looking for opportunities to develop and promote their skills across the BBC

Are You The Right Candidate?

  1. Extensive experience running a radio station ideally across a range of genres and content areas; programming expertise to create clarity of purpose across the whole station
  2. Clear understanding of the audience challenge facing the BBC and experience in the creativity, leadership and strategic vision to tackle the challenges
  3. A deep understanding of the content, including the linear offer and opportunities, the expanding move into digital audio and the role BBC Scotland can play, the importance of the cultural events and music scene in Scotland, with innovative thinking in how we deliver these
  4. Authentic and persuasive people skills - to lead large teams of people through a changing environment, and to influence and negotiate with senior stakeholders
  5. A deep understanding of the industry and media sector, the competitive landscape, including an understanding of economic/commercial/political issues affecting the BBC and the wider industry, a comprehensive understanding of current trends and issues within the broadcasting industry
  6. A comprehensive understanding of all BBC legal, contractual agreements and regulations as they apply to programme-making, broadcasting and digital media
  7. Play a full role in senior leadership team at BBC Scotland across all of its content and public purpose areas
