Job overview

This post will provide excellent grounding for any Healthcare Support Worker with a genuine interest in cancer and its treatments, and could lead to a rewarding future in cancer care nursing. The post has to offer:

  • Full training and support will be provided in obtaining the Care Certificate (if required)
  • You will be based in the out-patient Chemotherapy Unit
  • To assist and support members of the multi-professional team in order to provide a high standard of patient-centred care; performing duties without the need for constant direct supervision.
  • Being part of a forward-thinking, dynamic, supportive, and friendly team

With a base and training at York Oncology/Haematology Outpatients, there will be an opportunity to experience training in an area providing full elite care, to those affected by cancer and its treatments.

You must be able to commit to our Full Time HCSW Academy for the first 4 weeks of your employment with our Trust. Please note our HCSW Academy takes place at our training site in Holgate, York. We are unable to provide travel options or reimburse travel costs for attendance at this.

As a Healthcare Support Worker at York Hospital, you will be part of a multi-professional team providing high standards of care to our patients. You will maintain and promote patient independence and dignity to ensure each patient receives a positive experience. Please see the attached document 'Healthcare Support Worker Key Duties' to see a full list of key duties.


As a Healthcare Support Worker, you may be expected to work a combination of shifts including nights, weekends, and Bank Holidays:

  • Early - 07:00-15:00
  • Late - 12:00 - 20:00
  • Long days - 07:00 - 20:00
  • Night - 19:30 - 07:30

Essential criteria
  • Detailed understanding of the role of a HCA
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a Health or Social care setting
Education
Essential criteria
  • Numeracy/Literacy skills to Functional Skills Level 1 (GCSE Grade 2-3, D-F or equivalent)
  • Willingness to undertake training
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2/3 health care related qualification e.g., BTEC, NVQ, T-Level, Apprenticeship
Skills
Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal English communication Skills Including: Able to communicate well with patients and other members of staff (face to face or over the phone) and where there are any barriers to communication - e.g. language barrier
  • Understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality
  • Ability to deal with distressing and emotional situations with empathy, sensitivity, and diplomacy

DBS Checks

Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in 1 payment or over a six month period once you start employment. By applying you are agreeing to this undertaking. If you are successful you will be asked to confirm if you wish to pay in one amount or in instalments. The charges are currently £27.38 for a standard check and £55.38 for an enhanced check. The level of check will be determined by the post you are applying for.
