St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response, Falls response, Night Time Economy and Homelessness outreach) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, NHS Cadets and Young Responders programmes). There is also a buoyant social enterprise network which delivers first aid training and supplies medical consumables to businesses and consumers.


Job Summary


The Governance Officer plays an important role in supporting the Company Secretary and Governance Team at the heart of St John, including governance administration, secretarial support to two Committees, project managing the recruitment of executive and senior Trustee roles and oversight of our policy framework.

The Governance Officer provides high-level support to their respective executive and trustee stakeholders. This role requires somebody with a confident manner, personal resilience, the ability to manage and build and maintain relationships with senior stakeholders - both internally and externally - and the ability to operate under pressure. The role holder will need to be confident using technology and able to adapt to the evolving technology to enhance delivery of the work. Due to the nature of this role, the role holder must be able to handle confidential information and understand the need to demonstrate a professional and approachable image at all times.

The Governance Officer works closely with the Executive Assistant Team to coordinate compliance with our policy framework. They will also undertake tasks and activities specific to the committees they support, be involved in ad-hoc or ongoing business workstreams and may be required to support broad cross functional activities.


About You


To be successful in this role, you need to be Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (Grade C / 4) including Maths & English, minimum 5, Working effectively within a highly complex, matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders, Ability to manage busy and demanding schedules, and effectively prioritise work and proven track record of providing high level of administrative support to a senior Executive office or non-executive leaders.


About the Role

  • Lead on providing committee secretarial support to important Board Committees. This will involve working closely and directly with the relevant trustee chair and the accountable lead executive sponsor to the Committee, to successfully manage the responsibilities of the Committee, including preparation of agendas, scheduling meetings, circulating agenda papers and other relevant activities.
  • Proactively drafting correspondence and reports for relevant Chairs of Committees and executive stakeholder(s) as well as preparing briefings to ensure they are fully prepped for upcoming Committees.
  • Organise and support Governance directorate meetings to support the Director of Governance lead a well-connected and motivated team.
