Job SummaryThe portering department transfers patients, goods, and any other items around the trust in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner. Porters respond to requests for their services as quickly as possible to provide a positive patient experience in a safe professional manner and first-class service that epitomises the Christie reputation.
This position includes a whole spectrum of duties, from showing compassion and care for patients and relatives to physically demanding tasks such as moving and storing gas cylinders or furniture. A main component of the position is the collection, transportation, and disposal of waste materials including clinical waste from wards and theatres.
The successful applicant will be on the front line and will be expected to be always polite and respectful.
This is a permanent contract of 37.5 hours per week, including working weekends on a one on-one-off rota.
Main Duties of the JobThe purpose of the portering department is the transfer of patients, goods, and any other items around the trust in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner.
Job Responsibilities- To transfer all patients throughout the trust estate in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner as requested using appropriate means of transport, using the portering management software TeleTracking.
- To transfer goods throughout the trust estate in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner using the portering management software TeleTracking.
- The collection of specimens from wards/depts. and delivery to the laboratories in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner using the portering management software TeleTracking training for which will be provided.
- The collection of blood products from the blood room and delivery to wards/depts. in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner as per blood products transfusion training and procedures.
- To collect and transport patients from all areas of the site using a variety of wheeled equipment, e.g., wheelchairs, trolleys, beds.
- The movement of deceased patients from the wards/depts. to the Mortuary in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner always maintaining the respect and dignity of the patient.
- To carry the emergency Alertive/Allocate response device as a part of the trust cardiac arrest team that attends when a patient has a cardiac arrest and ensure that any equipment required by clinical colleagues is available where it is required as soon as possible and to offer any assistance needed to clinical colleagues.
- The movement of furniture around the trust.
- The delivery of clean linen and collection of dirty linen.
- The removal of waste furniture and electrical items for disposal.
- The safe delivery, storage, and correct segregation of full/empty medical gas cylinders.
- The movement of clinical equipment (such as pumps) to and from wards/departments as required in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner.
- The movement of beds and mattresses as required to and from wards/departments and the bed store.
- The delivery of stores items from the stores to the various wards and departments when required.
- The delivery of drugs from Pharmacy to wards/depts. in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner ensuring that all drug deliveries are handed to ward/dept. staff.
- The delivery of fluids from Pharmacy to wards/depts. in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner.
- The collection and distribution of patient notes across the site from health records and all wards/depts.
- The receipt, collection, delivery of incoming Trust mail from Royal Mail, couriers, and other distribution networks. The collection of mail from all Trust departments and dispatch of mail via Royal Mail, couriers, and other distribution networks.
- Report all damages to any infrastructure to the estates help desk.
- Report all door and alarm faults to the Security Manager.
- Always follow Trust policies and procedures.
- Use of telephones, pagers, radios, computers, touch screen devices as required for the role.
- Carry out all activities according to H&S risk assessments, including manual handling and lifting.
- Take part in the Trust annual PDR process.
- Ensure that all mandatory training is kept up to date.
- Any other duties designated as reasonable by the Head Porter, Charge Hand Porter, or Deputy Operational Services Manager.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Good literacy and numeracy skills
Desirable- Customer care experience
- NVQ Level 3
ExperienceEssential- Working as a part of a team and dealing with the public and patients in a polite and respectful manner.
- Manual handling
- General customer services.
Desirable- Portering experience in an NHS or similar environment
SkillsEssential- Good interpersonal skills
