Purpose of the role

The Catering team provides a breakfast, lunch and dinner service as well as hospitality, to students and staff during term time, and during a period in the summer for lets. This is a busy and closely knit team.

The role of Deputy Food Services Manager is to provide the highest level of service to members of the school students, staff and visitors. You will ensure the effective and efficient operation of the main Dining Hall, café alongside any hospitality and events. You will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and pastoral management of the Front of House team, including team members located in our two satellite sites. Working closely with the Catering Manager, you will play a vital role in maintaining and setting high standards of service and presentation to deliver excellence across all our services.

The Deputy Food Services Manager will assist the Catering and Deputy Catering managers in achieving and maintaining a superior service and presentation; this includes the smooth running and appropriate management of all food service areas and service quality, personnel and budgetary matters, and Health and Safety and hygiene standards. It is expected that you will run the department in the absence of the Catering and Deputy Catering managers.

This is an active, hands-on role that requires energy and drive to deliver outstanding results in service provision.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Coaches the Front of House and Café team by providing constructive feedback on a regular basis to ensure individual growth and wellbeing, encouraging teamwork across the department, high performance and loyalty.
  • Supports the Catering Manager by undertaking management of performance for members of the Food Services Team, highlighting good performance and identifying areas for development that will benefit team members.
  • Works with the Catering Manager to identify training needs within the team, generating development plans via appraisal.
  • Empowers the team to take responsibility and provide excellent service.

Administration

  • Deputises for the Catering and Deputy Catering Manager, in their absence.
  • Works alongside the Catering Manager to continually develop the service bringing innovation and creativity to service presentation.
  • Supports the Catering Manager with the planning and organising of Hospitality events.
  • Supports the Catering Manager to facilitate service and operational changes as needed.
  • Undertakes responsibility for Food Services Team rotas and working patterns which includes timesheets for the department.
  • Records all staff sickness and holiday, and informs the Food Services Manager in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for overseeing that the correct stock levels of perishable and non-perishable items are maintained, including stocks for the Cafe.
  • Responds to emails and enquiries in a timely and appropriate manner, updating the Hospitality weekly summary and communicating with the Catering Manager and Head Chef as required.

Health and Safety/Compliance

  • Follows due diligence in accordance with the Chartwells Food Safety and Health and Safety Policy.
  • Reports immediately all damages, breakdowns, defects of equipment, utensils and fabric of working environment, to the Catering Manager or to School's Facilities team.
  • Maintains and sets exemplary standards of personal presentation and hygiene.
  • Attends and participates in all pertinent meetings and relevant training as requested.

Essential

Qualifications:

Good standard of general education.

Fluency and accuracy in written and spoken English.

Good level of numeracy.

NVQ level 2 or similar qualification in hospitality.

Experience:

Has at least 3 years' experience of leading and supervising teams.

Experience of working in a busy catering operation.

Excellent customer care and service skills.

Can demonstrate high levels of hospitality and events set up.

Shows a good level of spoken and written English.

Knowledge:

Has a good level for food allergen awareness.

Understands COSHH.

Ability to work within a company food safety policy.

Good knowledge and experience of Microsoft, Outlook, and other booking systems.

Skills and Attributes:

Ability to work quickly, calmly and effectively under pressure.

Has an eye for detail professionally.

Has a high level of personal hygiene and a professional appearance.

Is self-motivated and pro-active.

Has the ability to use their own initiative.

Adaptability and flexibility to manage a variable workload; able to prioritise and undertake tasks in a logical and methodical manner.

Is friendly and personable when communicating with others.

Flexible attitude to work.

Ability to work under instruction and willingness to support colleagues.

In good health and can carry out work that may involve standing for long periods, lifting and carrying.

Desirable

Qualifications:

Food Hygiene Certificate CIEH level 2 or equivalent.

Food Allergen Certificate.

Experience:

Has experience of food service set up and food presentation.

Has experience of planning working patterns and rotas.

Experience of working in a similar education environment.

Understands stock rotation, food labelling, storage and the basic principles of HACCP.
