Job description

Introduction:

Working within the Coveris Food Science Laboratory, as part of our wider Technical team,

The Food Packaging Technologist role is primarily responsible for food science technology integrated with flexible packaging knowledge to bring benefit across many market sectors/categories, such as: prepared produce, fresh and cured meats, cheese and bakery products.

As part of the Food Science team this role will add value to the Coveris product offering through the application of food science technology to both product and packaging materials/processes, enhancing product shelf life and quality, reduction of food waste, ensuring food safety is maintained and never compromised, helping wider technical team to develop the next generation of Sustainable packaging technology.

Principal Accountabilities:
  1. Primary data collection from shelf-life trials – carrying out analysis such as organoleptic and gas analysis to understand the relationship between packaging and food.
  2. Overseeing site based laser capability to ensure capability and reliability in our product offering. Working with the senior laser leads, operators, and the wider technical team.
  3. Overseeing perforation trials through the factory to ensure new processes, techniques and specs can be efficiently processed.
  4. Assisting in writing shelf-life trial protocols and trial reports for important customer projects, including data entry analysis and formatting.
  5. Attendance of food science/application development trials at customer sites, including additional support on external project meetings if required.
  6. Project Management for Food Science, Laser & perforation-based projects.
  7. Supporting our production and quality teams with food safety queries in relation to perforation equipment and measuring systems.
  8. Working with internal systems, including the proper application of perforation specs and diagrams to jobs moving through the system.
  9. Internal & external food science training, assisting with customer visits and tours.
  10. Supporting and maintaining internal business systems such as, EQMS, project tracker and associated management software.
  11. Support the central technical team in the creation of “right first time” packaging solutions to meet customer performance requirements, and our sustainability pledges.
  12. Day to day support of the Department Manager.
  13. Perform other duties not written above as prescribed by the line manager.
Liaison with:

Technical team, Technical Field Services, Sales team, customers and suppliers, and other site-based departments where food science input or data may be required.

Who we are looking for:

Preferably degree qualified in Food Science, Food Biotechnology, Horticultural Plant Science, Biology or a related field.

  1. Computer literate, with experience working with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience working with artwork programs such as Adobe Illustrator would also be a benefit.
  2. Well-developed communication skills, with the ability to influence and liaise with colleagues at all levels.
  3. Well-developed presentation skills.
  4. Ability to travel to our multiple sites and customers within the UK, as well as international travel at times. A full UK driving license would be required.
  5. Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  6. Self-motivated with the ability to work in a pressured, fast moving, dynamic environment.
