Job Title: Finishing Operator - RUMBLING - AEROSPACE


Location: Denham, Middlesex


Department: Packing Department


Salary: £28 - £#removed# p/a


Job Overview:

A Rumbling Finishing Operator in the aerospace field is a specialist who operates machines that smooth, polish, or deburr metal parts—typically using a vibratory or barrel finishing process often referred to as "rumbling." These processes are essential in aerospace manufacturing to ensure parts meet exacting surface finish and quality standards.


To be conversant with and undertake a variety of finishing and inspecting operations to vibration deburr to the required quality standards and in accordance with work schedules.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Load aerospace components into rumbling (vibratory or tumbling) machines.
  2. Add media and compounds (like ceramic, plastic, or abrasive stones) to assist in the finishing process.
  3. Monitor and adjust machine settings such as time, speed, and media composition.
  4. Inspect parts for quality, surface smoothness, and compliance with aerospace specs (e.g., no burrs or sharp edges).
  5. Clean and maintain equipment, ensuring minimal contamination or machine downtime.
  6. Work to tight tolerances and follow aerospace safety and quality procedures.
  7. Smooth airflow over components (critical for aerodynamics).
  8. Ensure safety and reliability by eliminating burrs and surface flaws.
  9. Adhere to quality standards such as AS9100 or NADCAP.
  10. Accurately interpret engineering drawings and work instructions/build plans.
  11. Employ appropriate techniques as specified on job cards relevant to specific components.
  12. Carry out processes in accordance with laid down procedures/SOP's within the department.
  13. Achieve required quality standards.
  14. Adhere to all relevant Health and Safety regulations.
  15. Complete work in accordance with required work schedules.
  16. Maintain productivity at the highest level.
  17. Undertake self-inspection and quality checks in accordance with laid down quality standards.
  18. Assist in the successful implementation of ongoing Lean Initiatives including 5S activities and Continuous Improvement programmes.
  19. Monitor the fitness for purpose of tools and equipment.
  20. Handle materials, goods, and components carefully and comply with safety regulations.
  21. Report any dangerous practices and other dangers to local supervision.
  22. Undertake formal training relevant to the job.
  23. Perform general housekeeping cleaning duties to maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Vibration Deburring:

  1. Operate barrel tumbling and vibratory finishing equipment.
  2. Prepare the metallic surface for further processing including anodising and passivation.
  3. Suitably mask components to ensure bores, holes, slots are free from abrasive media before entering machinery.

Requirements and Skills (ESSENTIAL):

  1. Must come from a manufacturing / engineering background.
  2. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and their related ADR's.
  3. Background in H&S policies and procedures / QAI's and COSHH regulations.
  4. MS Office proficient.
  5. SAP.
  6. Familiarity with engineering hand tools.
  7. Understanding of measuring equipment.
  8. Basic standard of education (GCSE's or equivalent).
  9. Mechanical apprenticeship desirable.
