Job description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen within the Catering Service Delivery team for a new band 3 Supervisor to work as part of the team of catering service delivery experts in assisting to deliver service excellence to the Leeds Teaching Hospitals patients.

The patient catering service at Leeds is about to enter a period of exciting change and development in the delivery of excellence in patient catering services. This is a very unique role and will be highly rewarding for the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day supervision of a team of staff in the completion of their duties in line with local & Trust policies and procedures. A significant proportion of the role will involve the coaching & development of the catering and customer service skills of front line Ward Housekeeping staff - including other Supervisors and Managers - to ensure that all ward level patient food services are delivered in a professional manner, in line with the department expectations and to the appropriate legislative and nationally required standards. Key aspects of the role are also product development, evaluations and trials of patient food items and development of new service methods.

The Facilities team within the patient catering department provides a wide range of catering services to many diverse clinical settings for our patients. The facilities team embraces development and progression of its staff and looks for a progressive and proactive approach to support our staff and patients. The patient catering team is a relatively small but well-established group of staff which creates a friendly and welcoming team ethos.

Job responsibilities
  1. The first line management of Patient Environment staff.
  2. To react and deal with independently any operational situation arising using own initiative in line with Patient Environment and Trust systems/policies ensuring serious situations are immediately brought to the attention of next in line manager.
  3. As part of team meetings to actively take part and contribute to any developments that occur including making proposals to changes in Patient Environment.
  4. To communicate effectively with Sisters, nursing staff and patients to ensure the effective delivery of the service.
  5. The scheduling of work and appropriate allocation of duties to team members, in line with agreed allocation sheet, work schedules.
  6. To manage staff to ensure that they are fulfilling their duties correctly in line with agreed practices and procedures and that each staff performance reaches the appropriate level.
  7. Ensuring the timely and correct performance of routine and periodic cleaning duties in line with agreed service specification.
  8. To carry out regular recorded monitoring of the services including the standard of cleanliness and food service and identify and rectify specific areas of failing.
  9. Conduct and take part in the recruitment, training, induction and appraisals of staff.
  10. The supervision of staff, reporting any breaches of discipline to the Assistant Hotel Services Manager.
  11. Ensuring that all staff maintain a high standard of personal hygiene, and are smart in their appearance and wear the correct form of uniform/protective clothing. Organise replacements as required.
  12. Ensuring that all information is collected and recorded in the event of any accidents and that appropriate action is taken to prevent any similar occurrences.
  13. To assist with the security of the building and contents as required.
  14. To record and complete duty rotas, time sheets and maintenance of staff records including control of overtime and process as required by Patient Environment and Trust policies to help contribute towards the control of expenditure within budget and effective record keeping.
  15. To keep the manager abreast of matters affecting the delivery of the service and to make recommendations on improvement.
  16. To liaise with the manager on staff welfare and related problems.
  17. To ensure the safe provision of patients meals and beverages within established time parameters working within the Trust codes of practice for food safety.
  18. Checks all menu summary sheets both before ordering meals and after meal service for accuracy and full completion. Ensuring that wastage is recorded and kept to a minimum and that action is taken on any incomplete or unacceptable information.

  20. To ensure that all menu summary sheets are sent to the Receipt and Transfer point in a timely manner.
  21. To supervise and monitor the patient meal service ensuring that Food Safety and food presentation is adhered to at all times and that the patients are served the meal they have ordered and that it is appropriate to meet their needs.
  22. To oversee the collection and return of all thermo containers from and to the Receipt and Transfer points and that the thermo containers are clean and in good repair.
  23. To promote good housekeeping including the timely removal of any refuse/rubbish etc and that the use of inappropriate storage areas (eg corridors) is avoided.
  24. Ensure that all equipment and materials are kept clean and in a good state of repair, reporting defects immediately using agreed system and ensuring that they are available to use in the quickest time possible.
  25. To instigate and maintain quality control of the area of responsibility against agreed service level agreements, initiating and ensuring remedial action is taken where necessary.
  26. To promote a customer approach within the team when dealing with other staff and members of the public. Provide assistance to persons requiring directions etc.
  27. Monitoring of other related contracts such as window cleaning, pest control and linen providing a day to day contact for operational issues.
  28. Maintain close liaison with the receipt and transfer point to ensure a seamless patient meal service. Working together to solve issues/deal with any complaints and operational problems.
  29. To oversee the changing of curtains and blinds as necessary.
  30. To oversee ordering and distribution of all Patient Environment related stores.
  31. Post holder to oversee mop cleaning and distribution process.
  32. Compliance with and management of the Trust Attendance Management policy to include the monitoring of sickness and review of employees at the informal stage.
  33. To communicate with team members via team briefs/presentations.
  34. To act as a key trainer to update knowledge within the team of key subjects (ie. Infection Prevention & Control and Patient Environment).
  35. To supervise Receptions and provide cover as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Basic Food safety/Hygiene certificate (or ability to obtain on commencement)
  • Basic level English and Maths
  • Health & Safety / COSHH / training / awareness
Experience
  • Previous Catering / Cleaning experience
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Work within a food manufacture or warehouse environment
  • Customer facing / customer care experience

Additional Requirements
  • Able to meet physical requirements of the role
