We are looking for a proactive Production Engineer to join the Quality team at Laing O'Rourke's Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction (CEMC) in Worksop, Steetley, Nottinghamshire.

CEMC is at the heart of Laing O'Rourke's commitment to offsite manufacturing, and is the industry leading offsite precast facility, which began production in July 2009, manufacturing a range of products including walls, floors, columns, beams, platforms and bridge components for Laing O'Rourke's and external client's projects throughout the UK. Current projects include Everton's new stadium, Olympia redevelopment, Oxford Humanities and various HS2 packages.

The role of the Production Engineer is to provide technical assurance to the manufacturing operational team to deliver high quality product to client specification

The Opportunity:

  • The purpose of the Production Engineer is to formulate and drive the development and implementation of the CEMC Quality Management System, alongside the Quality Lead
  • This role exists to ensure client and CEMC Quality requirements are understood, agreed, and built into a robust Project Quality Plan, and are subsequently executed effectively through the manufacturing process at CEMC.
  • In this role, you will coordinate with Manufacturing Operations, Pre-cast Technical Solutions (PTS), Engineering and Project Coordination to control and improve the quality levels of goods and services.
  • This role will involve assisting continuous improvement and product development, whilst always maintaining compliance with project specification
  • The role will include managing and developing temporary works systems for projects that improve manufacturing efficiency, safety and consistency, whilst ensuring specification requirements are achieved
What will the role look like?:
  • Lead the development, update and implementation of Project Quality Plans and contract specific Inspection &Test Plans (ITP's)
  • Fully understand the specification requirements and assist the development of manufacturing methods and processes that enable requirements to be achieved
  • Ensure manufacturing task sheets and method statements incorporate systems, processes and suitable hold points to enable effective manufacture and specification requirements to be achieved
  • Ensure the quality requirements are set out in the "Acceptable Standards" documents and understood and implemented by the production teams prior to first cast manufacture
  • Support Root cause analysis processes for non-conforming product to drive continual improvement in internal and external quality metrics, and sharing learning across CEMC
  • Regularly and proactively update processes as required to ensure product compliance
  • Review finished product to evaluate effectiveness of manufacturing processes and procedures, capturing lessons learned and ensuring these are communicated to the team
  • Promote and build improvement plans to increase Right First Time
  • Report regularly on the quality performance trends in your area of responsibility, proactively seeking opportunities to drive improvements
  • Provide direct feedback and advice on the effectiveness of Quality Control activities and raising concern if quality requirements are not being consistently achieved
  • Interrogate design information to identify key interfaces and ensure suitable controls are implemented for compliance
  • Identify product and project materials testing requirements and ensure these are captured within the Project Quality Plan and collection of records is implemented
  • Undertake the role of Temporary Works Supervisor / Deputy Temporary Works Coordinator as appropriate, depending on the risk level for specific project/product, in coordination with the CEMC Temporary Works Coordinator
  • Promote and implement Engineered Safety initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with all functions, forming strong professional relationships across CEMC
  • Set high standards and represent the Quality and Technical function within the production area
  • Provide challenge in a professional and inclusive manner, to drive improvements in Quality, representing the views of the client at all times
What skills & experience are we looking for?
  • Experience within the Technical/Engineering function, ideally within a project execution remit (e.g Site/Section Engineer or equivalent)
  • Good understanding of concrete standards and specifications
  • Good understanding of construction tolerances
  • Strong decision maker
  • Commercial awareness
  • Be able to represent the business on Quality matters and be able to present on Quality performance.
