Job description

Georges River Council is seeking expressions of interest from Community Members for positions on the Georges River Local Planning Panel (GRLPP). The positions are open to residents living in the Blakehurst, Mortdale, and Peakhurst Wards.

In March 2018, the GRLPP commenced as the consent authority for certain development applications and provides advice and recommendations on planning proposals.

A Ministerial Direction issued under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 outlines the kind of applications that are to be determined by the GRLPP. The schedule of categories guiding the types of development to be determined by the Panel includes:

  • Conflict of interest
  • Contentious development
  • Departure from development standards
  • Sensitive developments

The GRLPP comprises four members including: the Chair (selected by the Minister for Planning), two professionals with expertise in town planning or other related fields (selected by Council from a pool of candidates managed by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure), and one community representative selected from a pool of members appointed by Council (being a minimum of one from each Ward within the Georges River Local Government Area).

Nominated members are required to:

  • Be current residents within the Georges River Council Local Government Area (LGA) and applicable wards
  • Be able to work within a team
  • Have knowledge and awareness of the LGA, planning issues, and matters of concern to the local community
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the planning process and assessment issues (but not expected to be experts)
  • Be able to represent and communicate the interests of the local community
  • Commit to attending the Panel meetings and site inspections
  • Contribute constructively to the determination of applications
  • Not be a staff member of Georges River Council
  • Adhere to the Planning Panels Operational Guidelines and Planning Panels Code of Conduct
  • Complete the Pecuniary Interest Form to be placed on Council's website

Applicants are required to be aware that under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, those ineligible to become panel members (and will not be considered) include:

  • An elected Councillor of any Council
  • A property developer within the meaning of section 96GB of the Election Funding, Expenditure and Disclosures Act 1981
  • A real estate agent within the meaning of the Property, Stock and Business Agents Act 2002

To apply, you must respond to the criteria listed below, detailing the reason you are seeking appointment and any additional relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. In addition, please submit a copy of a current resume.

Consideration, assessment, and appointment of applicants is at the sole discretion of Council.

Salary: Members will be remunerated for attending panel meetings.

Enquiries: Carine Elias, Manager Development & Building on 9330 6015.
