Reporting to the Chair of the MLSN Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership, management, programmatic quality, budget oversight, and economic viability of MLSN. All other staff members report to the Executive Director.

STRATEGY and PLANNING

Working with the Board and staff, the Executive Director leads long-range visioning and strategic planning efforts. The Director is responsible for setting MLSN’s operational plans and reviewing the organization’s progress against plans.

PROGRAMMING

The Executive Director is responsible for oversight of program staff developing MLSN’s initiatives and their implementation. These programs comprise over 1,000 self-enrichment learning opportunities, including classes and lectures (in person, online and at multiple locations), local/regional tours, and national and international trips that attract approximately 6,000 unique students and 11,000 enrollments per year. The Executive Director works to ensure that MLSN enhances its position as a strong community asset and a leader in its field.

DEVELOPMENT and MEMBERSHIP

With the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for developing a culture of philanthropy among MLSN’s extensive constituents. The Executive Director oversees all fundraising activities and supervises development/membership staff engaged in MLSN’s programs to attract annual, capital, membership, planned giving, special project, government, and endowment gifts that will assure the financial stability and continued growth of MLSN.

MARKETING, PUBLIC RELATIONS, and COMMUNICATIONS

The Executive Director is the chief public spokesperson for MLSN and works to increase its visibility. Together with the Board and staff, the Executive Director represents MLSN in a variety of forums and media to promote the organization and its work and establishes and maintains relationships and partnerships with various organizations, businesses, other non-profits, and government entities including local (Radnor Township), regional and state. The Executive Director supervises marketing/communications staff in developing and executing effective strategies to promote MLSN programs to current and potential audiences.

FINANCE and ADMINISTRATION

Together with the Board, the Executive Director ensures the financial integrity and health of the organization. Duties include supervising the timely and accurate reporting of all financial transactions, monitoring funds so that MLSN operates within the Board-approved budget, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

FACILITIES

The Executive Director works with operations, programming, travel/tour staff and consultants to ensure that adequate, safe space and equipment is provided for staff, instructors, and students at the Creutzburg Center and all otherprogram locations.

STAFFING AND HUMAN RESOURCES

The Executive Director is responsible for the hiring, management, evaluation and retention of competent, qualified staff and supervises the implementation of its HR policies. The Director is responsible for inculcating the mission and values of MLSN and for maintaining high morale in the workplace.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of five years nonprofit managerial experience with both supervisory and budgetary responsibility
  • Prior experience working with a non-profit Board of Directors and with volunteers
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising
  • Superior communications skills: writing, speaking, collaborating
  • Strong management, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • Government relations experience, including securing funding
  • Experience in education and/or arts and culture

ABOUT MAIN LINE SCHOOL NIGHT

Main Line School Night (MLSN) was founded in 1938 by Harry Creutzburg, a Radnor resident, offering 11 classes on Monday nights at Radnor High School. What began as an “experiment in adult education” has become a community treasure, inspiring thousands of residents in the area to make lifelong learning an integral part of their lives.

Now a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, MLSN offers over 1,000 day, evening and weekend non-credit classes, trips and special events. They span topics such as history and current affairs, dancing and fitness, cooking, languages, arts and culture and more. Today, most classes are offered in the historic Creutzburg Center, as well as Lower Merion High School, local businesses and online.
