Electrification of transport is a key pillar of ESB’s Net Zero 2040 Strategy – reducing the carbon impact from transport and improving air-quality while growing our business. ESB owns and operates an extensive public EV Charging Network in Great Britain and Ireland consisting of over 2,000 fast, rapid and high power EV charging points. ESB’s strategy, consistent with our role as a pioneer in Electromobility and our ambition to capture value from the global trend in electrification of transport, is to continue to expand our EV charging infrastructure network. Additional engineering resource is required to manage this deployment and provide expert input to the design and build of the network.

The nature of the deployment means that a variety of locations will be progressed for installation, including roads, highways, Council and private 3rd party land. Reporting to the Pre-Construction & Design Manager, the successful candidate will be required to provide expert input to the designs, produce site-specific physical drawings of the development with associated design risk assessments, manage the planning process and the grid connection application processes. The candidate may also be required on occasion to manage ESB’s subcontractors throughout the pre-construction and construction phases. Engagement in project management meetings, both internal and external facing and the ability to manage stakeholders effectively will be a requirement.

The successful candidate will be required to work collaboratively in cross function project teams and deal with external stakeholders including contractors and clients. Regular travel to sites will be a requirement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to prospective sites to conduct detailed surveys of existing conditions
  • Production of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) layout designs for EV charging sites using AutoCAD design software based on site surveys and ESB’s standard designs, to be accompanied by Design Risk Assessments
  • Contributing expert engineering input to standard and site-specific design development
  • Ensuring adherence to the BS7671 and other statutory/regulatory requirements in all design and works
  • Supporting management of Health & Safety throughout the pre-construction process, including design co-ordination workshops, preparing Pre-Construction Information, and ensuring the obligations of the Principal Designer (PD) or Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) role are discharged appropriately by ESB.
  • Supporting establishment of supply chains through tender specifications and assessments
  • Lead the submission of in-house or externally contracted planning applications through to consent
  • Identifying and progressing grid connection application requirements for the works, including liaison with the relevant DNOs (Distributer Network Operators), IDNOs (Independent Distributer Network Operators) or ICPs (Independent Connection Providers)
  • Assisting in the management and coordination of ESB’s subcontractors and suppliers

Experience and Qualifications

  • A relevant 3rd level qualification or equivalent work experience is essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience in highways or similar engineering.
  • Ability to produce high quality CAD design drawings using AutoCAD design software
  • Knowledge and understanding of EV charging technology, design and construction
  • Good understanding of the obligations placed on the Client and Principal Designer under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015. Excellent client-facing and teamwork skills
  • Experience controlling quality, safety and planning of HV or LV electrical installations
  • Excellent problem solving abilities
  • Familiarity with risk management
  • Knowledge & experience of EV charging infrastructure deployment or other highways projects (e.g. public lighting)

Location

London or Coventry

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least two anchor days per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.
