Entry Level Medical Engineer

Band 4

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites. Our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Medical Engineering Department at Alder Hey Childrens NHS FT for an Entry Level Medical Engineer. This is a Permanent post within the Electronics Workshop, working closely with the Senior Engineers and other healthcare professionals to provide a safe and effective equipment management service.

As a member of a multi-disciplined team of technicians, you will be required to work with minimum supervision. Duties will include the routine maintenance of medical equipment; including patient monitoring, IV Therapy, diagnostic, medical gas, and pathology equipment, and the fault rectification of said equipment.

An onsite Practical skills test is a Mandatory requirement of the Interview process. Please DO NOT apply if you cannot facilitate this requirement.

Main duties of the job

  • To possess a relevant Level 3 qualification in an Engineering related subject and equivalent experience in the maintenance of highly complex Medical Devices.
  • To commission, repair, maintain, overhaul, and recalibrate a wide range of medical equipment.
  • To work regularly on equipment, which may be 'patient connected', in areas including Intensive care and HDU, theatres, and home environments.
  • To complete all documentation, including safety tests, fault history, and commissioning records.
  • To attend training courses and update one’s own technical knowledge of specialist equipment.
  • To participate in an annual performance review and develop a Personal Development Review with the consultation of the line manager.

Working for our organisation

The Medical Engineering Department is situated on the 2nd floor of the main building in the C wing of Alder Hey's Hospital in the Park, built in 2015. The department comprises a multi-disciplined team ranging from Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Administrative staff, and Equipment Library staff.

You can expect to be supported heavily in this position by specialist training and development to build your skills, knowledge, and experience, with the potential for further opportunities within the department.

Person specification

Education and Training

  • To possess a Level 3 engineering apprenticeship and BTEC Level 3 or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering related discipline.
  • Hold a current driving license and have the use of a vehicle.
  • Specialist medical device maintenance training delivered by manufacturer training courses.

Experience of

  • Working on a range of electronic devices repairing to component level.
  • Interpreting schematic diagrams for fault finding and component identification.
  • Working on a broad range of Medical devices repairing to component level.

Knowledge of

  • Understanding of the electronics engineering discipline.
  • Working knowledge of medical devices electrical safety testing.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001-2015 and national BME standards.
  • Knowledge of Medical Device Directive and regulations.
  • Knowledge of national CQC Essential standards and MHRA publications.

Personal Attributes

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to disseminate complex information to senior colleagues.

Skills

  • High level of manual dexterity and manual handling skills.
  • Excellent IT/Software skills.
  • Experience of working with senior clinical staff and other allied healthcare professionals.
