An established industry player in air navigation services is seeking motivated individuals for their Engineering Technician scheme. This exciting opportunity offers a structured training program aimed at developing the skills necessary to become an Air Traffic Control Engineer. Based at Aberdeen Airport, you will engage in hands-on work with cutting-edge Air Traffic Management equipment, including radars and landing systems. As you progress through the 24-month program, you will take on increasing responsibilities, all while being part of a dynamic team that values problem-solving and proactive contributions. If you are passionate about engineering and eager to advance your career, this role is perfect for you.
NATS is the UK’s leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. It provides air traffic control services from two control centres supporting airports all around the UK, as well as a wide range of commercial solutions to over 30 countries internationally. Our people are at the heart of our purpose to advance aviation and keep the skies safe.
We are shaping the future of air traffic management through our focus on ‘advancing aviation and keeping the skies safe’ and we believe that the size and diversity of our business makes us an exciting choice for Engineering Technicians considering their future careers.
What will the scheme involve?
The scheme is designed to bring new entrants with limited work experience into NATS through a structured training program. This will provide you with the knowledge, skills and attitude required to become an Air Traffic Control Engineer working on live operational equipment. The scheme will provide you with a recognised, world-class level of training.
The role will be based at Aberdeen Airport, where you would be predominantly installing, calibrating and maintaining operational Air Traffic Management (ATM) equipment including Radars, Instrument Landing Systems (ILSs), Met equipment, etc. These roles are considered mobile and whilst based at Aberdeen, some travel to alternative sites would be likely and postings to other units on a permanent basis a possibility.
The Engineering Technician scheme runs over approximately 24 months and combines formal training with work placements; and as your experience increases, so will your responsibility – be prepared to meet deadlines and assist with the technical aspects of projects.
What we are looking for?
As far as qualifications are concerned, the scheme is open to those who have successfully completed, or are about to complete, a two-year Engineering BTEC ND/HNC/HND or a Level 3 Apprenticeship (equivalent military qualifications or military experience will be considered).
It is essential that your technical knowledge should have a practical bias and an understanding of Radio Frequency (RF) would be beneficial.
In terms of your skills and strengths as a person, you should be a good communicator, confident in your abilities and have a proactive approach to work. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation and decision-making skills are also essential, along with commitment, drive, energy, and an ability to work unsupervised as part of a small team.
It goes without saying that you’ll have a practical interest in engineering outside of your studies.
Aside from that, all we ask is that you hold a full UK driving licence or be willing to obtain one in addition to meeting the general health and colour vision standards as defined by our medical branch.
