Job summary

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is now recruiting for Clinical Fellows to work in its emergency departments at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and Horton General Hospital, Banbury. This offers a unique opportunity to work cross-site in a Major Trauma Centre and a district general hospital. The department also has close links with a world-class university that could help to develop you as teacher, mentor or educationalist.

We have significant experience with Portfolio Pathway applications for GMC specialist registration, and can offer secondments, in anaesthetics, intensive care medicine, adult medicine and paediatrics.

We also support a work life balance. We have an annualised rota, self-rostering and 1:3 weekends maximum. There is paid educational development time and a competitive salary. Both the city centre with Oxford spires and the historic university and the glorious countryside is within a close radius of the hospital. There is also easy access and public transport to London, the Cotswolds and the midlands.

Main duties of the job

Emergency Medicine Clinical Fellow equivalent to ST3 level or above.

Full time clinical fellows work a full shift rota across both departments, including day shifts, evening shifts, nights and weekend. The majority patients attending OUH EDs are ambulatory, and the majority will be discharged home at the end of their visit. Consequently, clinical fellows will spend much of their time diagnosing and treating ambulatory patients with minor illness and injury. However, clinical fellows will receive exposure to the full range of patients and conditions attending OUH emergency departments, with shifts in resus and paediatric areas.

DUTIES OF THE POST:

Principal Responsibilities:

In the Emergency Department, the Clinical Fellow will be responsible for the initial assessment and management of unselected acutely ill and injured patients. He/she/they will help to train and supervise more junior doctors (GP trainees and FY2 doctors). He/she/they will assist with clinical administration, for example, checking X-ray reports, corresponding with patients and their general practitioners. He/she/they will have opportunities to participate in the departments Clinical Governance activities, including departmental audit, and national audits required by the Healthcare Commission. He/she/they will also be expected to attend departmental teaching sessions. He/she/they will be responsible for keeping his/her/their resuscitation training up to date.

The division of responsibilities between sites will be discussed at interview and arrangements made clear in writing prior to appointment. Factors to be considered will be the preferences of the applicant, their training needs and skill sets, and the needs of the service in so far as they can be foreseen.

Work Commitment

As per rota. For full time registrars based at the John Radcliffe:

40 hours per week (before subtraction of leave entitlement);

Approximately three weekends in nine weeks;

Approximately seven nights in nine weeks;

Approximately one third to one half of shifts will be worked at the Horton Hospital.

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree
• ALS and PALS or APLS by the time of application
• Full MRCEM

Desirable

• ATLS or ETC
• Additional qualifications e.g. MRCP, MRCS, FRCA

Experience

Essential

• A minimum of four years post graduate medical experience by the time of application, of which at least 18 months has been worked in emergency medicine.

Desirable

• NHS Emergency Medicine Experience
• Relevant experience from other acute specialties e.g. general medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesia, critical care

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Excellent written and spoken English
• Ability to perform all foundation years "core procedure" skills safely and independently.
• Prioritisation and time management skills.
• Ability to communicate professionally at all times with patients and staff at all levels.
• Punctual, courteous, well informed.
• Motivated, diligent, receptive.
• IT literacy to include use of Outlook and Word.

Desirable

• Level 1 ultrasound competency
• Additional clinical skills relevant to EM
• Evidence of involvement in quality improvement, teaching, audit or research
