Winchester College has an exciting opportunity to appoint an Electrician starting as soon as possible.

ABOUT THE WORKS DEPARTMENT

The school has in its care an extraordinary range of buildings from chapels and classrooms to a swimming pool and science laboratories; from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first. The list embraces 11 Boarding Houses and over 100 staff houses.

This built environment is maintained and improved by the Works Department. Under the direction of the Estate Bursar, who also manages the capital projects, The Works Manager has a staff of around 30 operatives and is supported by various office staff.

Members of staff have a great affection for the school and 18 of its number have worked here in excess of 10 years. Combined with this affection, their exemplary skills produce a comprehensive and reliable service to the school community.

The department operates out of a new purpose-built facility in Norman Road.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ELECTRICIAN

Key Responsibilities

The main purpose of the role is:

Be part of a small team of electricians within a busy Works Department under the supervision of the Lead Electrician. In support of the department's wide-ranging duties, a willingness to work beyond your own trade is expected.

PERSON SPECIFICATION AND KEY QUALITIES

The successful applicant:

• Must be an experienced electrician who will be able to work unsupervised as well as within a team.
• Should have successfully completed an electro-technical apprenticeship and be qualified to NVQ level 3 including AM2. 18th Edition BS7671 or hold 18th Edition BS7671 City and Guilds 2382 or EAL equivalent would also be desirable.
• Should hold an ECS Gold Card or equivalent, which would also be desirable but not essential.
• Should have C&G 2391 Testing and Inspection, which would be advantageous but not essential.
• Should be experienced with installing, commissioning, testing, servicing and maintaining domestic and commercial electrical systems all in accordance with current regulations. It would be an advantage to have knowledge of fire alarms, heating controls, and network installations. The ability to work in occupied areas with care and sensitivity is essential.

In addition, applicants should have/be able to:

• A sound knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations/RAMS.
• The ability to plan and organise their own work.
• Understand the importance of customer satisfaction and good customer care.
• Be self-motivated, show initiative, and able to offer solutions to problems encountered.
• Good IT skills (knowledge of PDA desirable).

Hours of Work

This is a full-time, permanent position; 40 hours per week, 52 weeks of the year. Monday-Friday 08.00 – 16.30 with the addition of some evening and weekend requirements as part of an emergency call-out rota.

The salary for this position is £39,500 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary is paid monthly, in arrears, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually and this appointment will be next reviewed in September 2025.

Timesheets for on-call will be submitted monthly and paid as overtime additional to monthly salary.
