Job description

This full-time, permanent position entails a mix of UK-based work and foreign travel to design, build, deploy, maintain, and recover sensor suites that gather data for marine surveillance.

The ideal candidate will have an understanding of networking and communication equipment.

Primarily you will be based in Surrey, for hands-on workshop-based build phases of projects, with travel required across the UK and abroad to deploy and maintain the sensor suites.

When working away, locations are generally remote and range from the cold and wet of the Shetland islands to the heat and humidity of tropical islands. Much of the work is outdoors and ranges from the physicality of assembling scaffold poles and handling moderately heavy pieces of equipment to the dexterity of terminating ethernet cables (all of which may have to be done in inclement weather).

A large amount of the work is at height, whether that's on a cliff top, a lighthouse or up a mast - the ideal candidate must be ok working at height.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Build and test of panels, control cabinets, and distribution boxes
  2. Wiring and panel production
  3. Soldering, connector assembly, and crimping
  4. Test, interrogate, and fault-find systems
  5. Soldering at cable level and for PCB production
  6. Build and test of cables
  7. Battery cabling and termination
  8. Production of water-tight cable looms and coaxial cable products
  9. Use and maintain electrical tooling including a wide range of cable crimping tools
  10. Electrical installation and fit-out
  11. Working to Works Orders, drawings, engineering and production instructions
  12. Interpreting 2D CAD electrical schematics
  13. Power wiring, typically DC
  14. Installation of marinised systems
  15. Fault finding and rectification
  16. Working with electrical designers to develop and improve products, methods and drawings
  17. Reporting progress and any production issues
  18. Management of stock materials, consumables and good production housekeeping

Job Requirements:

  1. Experience in Electrical Engineering
  2. Full UK driving licence
  3. Strong personal organisational skills
  4. Independent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  5. Experience with Windows OS and networking
  6. Familiarity with communications systems and equipment
  7. Leadership skills with the ability to make decisions on the ground
  8. Eligibility for UK Security Clearance

General Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop effective and constructive solutions to challenges using personal judgement and initiative
  2. Maintain ability in and appropriate use of all relevant IT systems
  3. Act ethically, with integrity and in the best interest of the business
  4. Maintain a professional and supportive relationship with team members and other departments
  5. Carry out duties as detailed by management or an authorised representative
  6. Ensure good time management to minimise wasted time and maximise productivity
  7. Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with best practice and health and safety policies
  8. Ensure equipment used is safe, within electrical test date, and all guards and interlocks are working
  9. Report any potential health and safety hazards or violations
  10. Wear and regularly check PPE or work wear required for the job

Benefits:

  1. Competitive salary
  2. BUPA cover
  3. Stock options or other employee equity participation
