Job description

Tutors work with private students, and usually specialise in a particular area. While similar to teachers, Tutors do not need to be qualified as a teacher, and usually teach based on professional experience or academic qualifications. Music and language tutors are two such examples. Tutors will generally have the following responsibilities:

• Understand student needs and goals, and tailor tuition level accordingly
• Prepare tutorial and learning materials as required
• Schedule learning sessions either online or in-person as required
• Stay up to date with relevant curriculum or teaching materials as needed
• Manage teaching costs and charges
• Meet health and safety requirements and additional requirements such as background checks.
• Be willing to work with agencies or other educational bodies if required

Tutors need a similar skillset to teachers, with added business skills, as they will tend to work in a self-employed capacity or through an agency as a contractor. This means that excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Being highly organised and able to plan is also important, as Tutors are often required to manage their own schedules and those of their pupils. While official qualifications aren't fundamental, they can certainly be useful in adding credibility. A degree or higher in their area of specialism is therefore ideal.

Professional Maths Tutors - GCSE and A-level

Trefoil Tutors are looking to employ a full-time Teacher of Mathematics to teach up to fourteen weekly 90-minute sessions. The ideal candidate has: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), teaching/tutoring experience, and a strong academic background in Maths.
