Job Summary

  • To work collaboratively with other operational and clinical senior managers within the Imaging Group Management team to develop, support and deliver operational and strategic objectives within own specialist area.
  • To contribute to future departmental development including service and business planning and equipment purchase.
  • To provide expert leadership within the General X-ray (across sites) and Ultrasound Unit and maintain the highest level of expertise and competency within the specialties.
  • To manage the effective delivery and operation of the plain x-ray and ultrasound services within Radiology, and to provide necessary information to assist the strategic direction of plain film and ultrasound imaging within the Trust.
  • To monitor and control finance and is accountable for expenditure in own areas of responsibility. To manage a timely efficient and cost effective service within allocated resources. Act as budget holder responsible for stock control and purchase of consumables and necessary equipment for the service within budgetary limits.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain a high degree of clinical skills, expertise and competence and act as a role model for staff groups, monitoring and maintaining standards of care. To provide clinical expertise and supervision, including training and mentorship of all staff groups within own scope of practice.
  • Manage the cross site clinical workload within the Department adapting the service to respond to long and short-term demands, rearranging work lists in case of equipment failure and being responsive to the inconvenience caused to patients, so ensuring the daily workload is organised in line with clinical priorities.
  • Collaborate with the senior management team and Clinical Leads to enable the efficient and effective provision of the Imaging Service across UHCW NHS Trust. To take operational responsibility daily for the management of activity, resources, people and information to achieve agreed levels and standards of service delivery.
  • Support the long-term strategic planning for own area/s of responsibility.
  • Participate in request validation, vetting and justification (weighing the potential benefit of a medical exposure against any possible harm) within own scope of practice using clinical judgement & / or departmental protocols they have written in consultation with consultant radiologists.
  • Manage the pay and non-pay budgets within own areas of responsibility in accordance with Trust standing financial instructions and financial procedure.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Result Areas and Performance

  • Act as an advisor to Radiologists and referring clinicians providing specialist advice.
  • Ensure the provision of the highest standards of patient care and contribute to the management of the Radiology Department.
  • Work closely within a multidisciplinary team providing a high-quality radiology service to patients and staff.
  • Ensure Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, records are maintained as required and corrective action is taken where required. Working collaboratively with Radiology Governance Superintendent and Clinical Audit Lead to ensure patient safety and quality of care within own specialist area (Governance and audit).
  • Produce business cases for the strategic development of the service.
  • Be accountable for achieving quality and performance indicators, reporting to Imaging Management Board on specific KPI’s for the cross sectional service.
  • Keep abreast of current imaging developments/issues and bring to the attention of the Head of Operations any issues requiring action.
  • Take the lead in writing policy and procedures in General X-ray (across sites) and Ultrasound. These will directly impact on patient referral to treatment targets, patient pathways whilst on wards and in other departments and specialist wards.
  • Provide line management of staff within your specialty area(s) including staff rotas, recruitment, appraisal, CPD and performance.
  • Be responsible for ensuring suitable arrangements exist for the training program within the modalities for Radiology registrars, radiographers and radiographic students including those who visit the department on work experience.
