Job description

The Transport Manager will support the Fleet Manager, Operations Managers, and Contract Managers in day-to-day transport compliance and with fleet-related operational needs. The primary focus of the role is to ensure that:

  1. Transport operations are safe, legally compliant, and conducted in line with statutory guidelines.
  2. Operator License regulations are fully obeyed.
  3. Policies are fully implemented and respected.
  4. Transport and fleet KPIs are achieved.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  1. Being the named Transport Manager on Operator License.
  2. Managing day-to-day Operators License compliance, including but not limited to:
    1. Managing drivers' hours reports.
    2. Daily drivers defect reports.
    3. Collecting and managing compliance documents.
    4. Monitoring vehicle weights.
  3. Provide training to drivers, Supervisors, and Managers on all aspects of transport compliance.
  4. Carry out and record random driver and vehicle checks.
  5. Manage/monitor Supervisor random driver and vehicle checks.
  6. Monitor and update electronic fleet compliance system.
  7. Manage the "wall" maintenance planner.
  8. Gather transport-related data, managing and analysing results (including financial impact).
  9. Create and manage tachograph analysis and drivers' hours data systems.
  10. Supply transport/compliance and financial data to Fleet and Operation Managers.
  11. Manage and produce transport related reports.
  12. Liaise with vehicle manufacturers.
  13. Manage the local relationship with Contract Hire or Repair & Maintenance providers.
  14. Review and challenge (where necessary) Contract Hire or Repair & Maintenance provider's invoices and charges (data and cost analysis required).
  15. Liaise with maintenance, compliance, and training suppliers.
  16. Support, train, guide and manage Operation Teams on transport and compliance issues.
  17. Liaise with and support Health & Safety representatives in all matters relating to Fleet operations and vehicles.
  18. Review internal systems to identify actions to improve compliance and finances (damages, maintenance, tyres, and other cost analysis).
  19. In-depth accident investigation, providing guidance and training relating to accidents, and liaising with the HR Department in respect of any potential disciplinary action to be taken against staff members.
  20. Liaise with insurance providers and keep up-to-date records relating to insurance claims and investigations.
  21. Traveling between sites and operating centres to support wider operations when required.
  22. Analyse vehicle damage, tyre damage, vehicle telematics, relevant other data, and identify trends and root causes.
  23. Provide corrective driver training.
  24. Carry out internal fleet and transport audits, and create and maintain all local transport/compliance reports.
  25. Seek to improve fleet and transport efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions.
  26. Trial new vehicles and provide written reports on productivities and performance.

Essential characteristics:

Required skills, qualifications, abilities, and experience includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
  2. Highly motivated individual with good work ethic.
  3. Strong and demonstrable experience in transport and HGV operation environment.
  4. Proven track record of working to defined service KPIs.
  5. Previous people and driver management experience.
  6. Excellent administration skills and highly organised.
  7. Attention to detail.
  8. Excellent English (verbal and written) communication skills.
  9. Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) etc.
  10. Positive attitude and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  11. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  12. Full Category B driving license.
  13. Ability to travel for work when required.
  14. Honest and trustworthy.
  15. Able to work in a team or under own supervision.

Desirable characteristics:

Desirable skills, qualifications, abilities, and experience includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Waste industry experience.
  2. Category C driver license.
  3. ADR License.
  4. NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent health and safety qualification(s).
  5. Experience using VehoCheck vehicle compliance and fleet management software.
