Job description

Copello have partnered with an established engineering business in the recruitment of a Principal Safety Engineer based in New Malden.

Please note that this role requires SC Clearance.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct safety analyses, including Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs), Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), following established safety processes and standards such as Def Stan 00-056 and IEC 61508.
  • Develop system safety requirements to ensure compliance with both customer safety targets and those derived from system design.
  • Present detailed and well-structured safety arguments to both internal and external stakeholders, aiming to guide and influence safety-related decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, well-reasoned safety outputs, enhancing the organization’s reputation.
  • Support and participate in audits for internal and external design reviews and safety committee meetings to ensure adherence to safety standards and processes.
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering and communicating Systems Safety within the UK Defence sector, with a degree, HND, HNC in Engineering or Safety Management, or equivalent relevant experience in Systems Safety Engineering.
  • Knowledge and practical application of international and defence standards, including IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00-056.
  • Familiarity with safety assurance for COTS PE-based systems or high-integrity software applications.
  • Proficiency in safety and reliability analysis methods, including hazard identification and analysis, FMECA, FTA, and Functional Failure Analysis.
  • Understanding and use of tools and techniques for Risk Assessments and developing ALARP justifications.
