Job description

Associate Hydrogeologist

RPS is looking for an Associate Hydrogeologist to join our Water Sciences Team based in the UK.

What you'll be doing

As a specialist within our growing UK Water Sciences section and wider Environmental Compliance and Ground Engineering team, you will take up a leading position working on a wide range of projects requiring hydrogeological input including into major infrastructure, built development and water resources/environment studies, often covering both environmental and design elements.

The team works mainly on UK schemes but also supports international projects. With offices across the UK, you will have the choice to be based out of the office most conveniently located for you, working on a hybrid basis. Duties include:

  1. Plan, review and manage own projects ensuring client requirements and deadlines are met in accordance with the QA system.
  2. Take accountability for own projects, monitoring both performance and finances.
  3. Quality control the output of projects in accordance with the approved QA system including preparing project plans and fee agreements.
  4. Ensure quality advice is provided and work meets the required standard.
  5. Contribute to the development of the team business including work winning and marketing.
  6. Provide weekly/monthly reports as requested by the Technical Director.
  7. Support client management in conjunction with Directors.
  8. Responsible for signing off time sheets/holiday requests of staff.
  9. Responsible for interfacing with other section heads and Directors to ensure appropriate use and deployment of staff and resources to meet the team's operational and project needs.
  10. Undertake appraisals and development of any direct staff reports.
  11. Supervise and support junior members of staff where relevant.
  12. Ensure all project activities comply with UK environmental regulations and standards.
  13. Engage in continuous learning to keep abreast of the latest advancements in hydrogeology and related fields.
Who we're looking for
  1. Significant experience in the field of Hydrogeology (having attained at least a Senior or Principal grade in consultancy or relevant industrial/utility/regulatory/academic profession).
  2. UK hydrogeological project experience essential.
  3. Strong and demonstrable understanding of the underlying concepts of the water sciences with developed numerical and analytical skills.
  4. Working understanding and/or practical experience of groundwater modelling software, i.e. ConSim, LandSim, Remedial Target Methodology Worksheet, AquiferTest, GW Vistas, etc.
  5. Effective technical report writing and reviewing skills.
  6. Strong understanding of UK and European regulatory frameworks for water management, the contaminated land regime and environmental permitting.
  7. Experience providing specialist hydrogeological support to major linear infrastructure scheme projects - within both EIA and DCO planning regimes - including road, rail & pipeline developments covering designs, EIAs and Regulatory Permitting and environmental mitigation.
  8. Experience providing specialist hydrogeological support to water resources/environment projects; and/or built development/industry; covering drainage designs, EIAs, Regulatory Permitting and water neutrality.
  9. Experience in designing and delivering a wide range of complex/challenging hydrogeological investigations and water quality assessments.
  10. Experience managing projects entailing significant groundwater resources, modelling, contaminated land fate transport detailed quantitative risk assessments or rising groundwater/mine water components.
  11. Desire to work collaboratively and promote knowledge sharing and technical development of team.
  12. Experience of and desire to mentor and develop staff.
  13. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication and technical reporting skills.
  14. Desire to contribute to our business development.
  15. Professional registration / chartered status with a relevant industry body (e.g. Geological Society).
