• Supervise and mentor midwifery staff, promoting professional development and fostering a supportive team environment.
• Monitor clinical outcomes and implement improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and safety of care.
• Provide education to patients and families about their conditions and advocate for their needs within the healthcare system.
• Contribute to service planning, manage team schedules, and ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Women Centred Care

• As a continuity midwife you will be planning and implementing individualised midwifery led care in partnership with the woman and the multidisciplinary team. Using continual assessment and analysis you will provide continuity of carer throughout the woman’s pregnancy, birth and postnatal period to ensure her medical, psychological and social needs are assessed and holistically cared for.
• Provide high quality, evidence-based care and advice to women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods from within the hospital site.
• Provide continuity of care and carer in combination with emotional and psychological support during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods from within the hospital site.
• Liaise appropriately with services to ensure safe and effective care is provided to women at the right place, and at the right time. Act as an advocate for women, whilst safeguarding her and her wider family and social group where appropriate.
• Have an in depth understanding of barriers which may impact or inhibit women from accessing timely and regular antenatal care. Act as a care navigator to ensure timely access to the appropriate pathway is achieved.
• Have sound knowledge of both uncomplicated and complex pathways, physiological birth initiatives, safeguarding issues and their management.
• Advocate for women and support them in their choices surrounding pregnancy and birth, whilst empowering them and promoting birth as a normal, physiological process.
• Provide evidence-based education to women and facilitate Parent Education initiatives.
• Provide and perform accurate assessments and procedures during antenatal appointments, labour care (including supporting water birth, perineal suturing, cannulation and intravenous administration of drugs) and in the postnatal period.
• Support women’s choices regarding feeding their infant, whilst encouraging and promoting UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiatives. Administer medications under the scope of Midwifery Exemptions/Patient Group Directives when required or appropriate.

Person specification

Education

• Registered Midwife
• First degree in Midwifery or equivalent experience
• Evidence of post qualification education activity
• Midwifery High Dependency Care or equivalent course

Experience

• Completion of a preceptorship programme or equivalent, with evidence of working in a variety of settings
• Relevant clinical experience
• Excellent organisational skills
• Evidence of applying current research to practice
• Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
• Able to use own initiative
• Able to manage sensitive or difficult situations effectively
• Ability to demonstrate leadership skills.
• Ability to assist in staff development, appraisal and performance review.
• Ability to undertake and facilitate Water birth training/sessions
• Managerial experience

Skills and Knowledge

• Proven oral and written communication skills
• An ability to compile complex written information
• IT skills including Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint
• Undertake rota/rostering responsibility
• An ability to demonstrate ongoing commitment to learning and development
