Job Description:

Civil Engineering contractor who, due to a period of sustained growth, have a requirement for a TENDER ENGINEER / JUNIOR ESTIMATOR to join the team on a permanent basis.

Projects are primarily in the Renewable Energy sector and will expose the successful candidate to a real variety of work.

The purpose of the role will be to support the pre-construction phase of the projects by providing support to the Estimating team. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that key elements of the bid are assembled in a detailed, organised fashion.

Working closely with the estimating team, you will analyse bid specifications, drawings, and project documents to develop a thorough understanding of project requirements. This will involve conducting detailed quantity take-offs from engineering drawings to determine the quantities of materials, labour, and equipment needed for each project and obtaining costs from the market to feed into the bid. You will also assist in preparing estimates from first principles.

We believe this role would suit a GRADUATE CIVIL ENGINEER or GRADUATE QUANTITY SURVEYOR, or perhaps a CIVIL SITE ENGINEER with a couple of years’ experience looking to transition into a different role. The successful candidate will be heavily supported with guidance and training.

Role:

As a JUNIOR ESTIMATOR / TENDER ENGINEER, you will play a pivotal role in the preparation and submission of competitive bids for our power, energy, and civil engineering projects. You will be responsible for analysing technical drawings and specifications, engaging with our supply chain to discuss requirements, and ensuring our bids meet client expectations. Responsibilities:

  1. Cost Estimation: Assist in the preparation of Estimates from First Principles using Estimating software / and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  2. Technical Analysis: Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications to identify project requirements and understand the scope of work.
  3. Quantity Take-offs: Perform quantity take-offs from architectural and engineering drawings to determine requirements for materials, labour, and equipment.
  4. Pricing Enquiries: Where required, collaborate with the supply chain to obtain competitive pricing for materials and services, ensuring cost-effective and timely delivery.
  5. Subcontractor Enquiries: Where required, collaborate with subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing for materials and services, ensuring cost-effective and timely delivery.
  6. 3rd party system management: Monitor the various tender and enquiry portals for new information and or leads. Monitor tender portals for incoming messages received relating to live bids, retrieve these messages and files and distribute to the bid team.
  7. Document Control: Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of estimating activities, including records of assumptions, methodologies, quotations, and Tender Queries.
  8. Collaboration: Work closely with estimators, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to clarify project requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment between estimated costs and project scope.
  9. Site Visits: Attend site visits as may be required to gather additional information which may affect the bid and highlight any specific challenges to be overcome in order to provide a competitive offer.
  10. Bid Preparation: Assist in the preparation of detailed bids, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness. Collaborate with the team to ensure all aspects of the bid are well-documented and presented.
  11. Carry out any other duties appropriate for the role.

What you'll need to succeed:

  1. Education: HND in Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  2. Experience: Candidates with relevant site experience will have an advantage, although this is not essential.
  3. Technical Skills: Understanding of drawings and specifications. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  4. Analytical Skills: Analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and the ability to interpret complex project specifications and drawings.
  5. Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to present to mixed audiences.
  6. Time Management: Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a team environment, fostering collaboration and building positive relationships with colleagues and project stakeholders.
  8. Driving License: Essential.
