Job summary

As part of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) you will provide specialist assessment and intervention to offenders in prison. You will promote active engagement in meaningful occupations and facilitate the skills development and independence of patients. The postholder will work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals in prison in contributing to the development and delivery of safe, effective care, while also holding care co-ordination responsibility for a clinical caseload.

Main duties of the job

  1. Manage a complex clinical caseload.
  2. Work as a member of the multi-professional team and proactively support the NHSE&I safe staffing initiative.
  3. Lead on the development of evidence-based OT practice.
  4. Provide OT specific assessment & interventions via groups & individual work related to self-care, work, and leisure.
  5. Lead on service development.
  6. Lead and participate in research/audit/quality improvement activities.
  7. Supervise the work of junior staff including OT students on clinical placement.
  8. Contribute to and carry out risk assessment and management plans.
  9. Provide specialist OT advice to the multi-professional team.
  10. Work independently without direct supervision.
  11. Be an OT specialist and have in-depth knowledge of OT assessment and interventions for the offender group.
  12. Contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust wide OT service.
  13. Work within the social inclusion and recovery agenda.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To manage a capped caseload of offenders with complex mental health needs, taking on the role of Care Co-ordinator.
  2. To work with offenders to identify OT goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan, using specialist mental health & OT assessment tools & treatment techniques.
  3. To provide the most effective assessment & interventions.
  4. To plan & implement offender-led individual and/or group interventions, using activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
  5. To ensure offenders' health, social, cultural, and spiritual needs are always considered.
  6. To assess for and provide equipment to enhance independence in daily living skills for offenders with a physical disability in addition to their mental health needs.
  7. To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment to measure progress and identify outcomes.
  8. To plan and deliver services within the Care Programme Approach framework.
  9. To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on life skills to maximise functional ability.
  10. To assess the occupational needs of offenders and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment interventions.
  11. To identify appropriate & inappropriate referrals and prioritise workload.
  12. To manage effective discharge ensuring offender and all relevant agencies are given relevant information.
  13. To contribute to and carry out risk assessment & risk management plans.
  14. To work as part of the MDT and attend all relevant clinical meetings.
  15. To apply increasingly complex skills and knowledge to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Band 7 OT.
  16. To attend all relevant mandatory training as directed by the Trust.
  17. To contribute to CPD through participation in internal and external training and other development opportunities.
  18. To contribute to the team's clinical governance and quality agenda.
  19. To ensure practice is evidence-based.
  20. To demonstrate understanding and application of national guidelines and legislation relating to mental health & social care provision.
  21. To observe and apply Health and Safety regulations.
  22. To always apply risk management procedures.
  23. To promote and facilitate patient involvement in own clinical area.
  24. Research & audit activities.
  25. Personal Continuing Professional Development.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ:

All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting in order to work in a Prison Setting. This will be completed as part of the pre-employment checks through Oxleas and the prison vetting team.

You will need to provide:
  • Proof of right to work documentation.
  • Proof of ID, needs to include 1 photographic ID.
  • Proof of address documentation.
  • Non-UK passport holders will need to have correct documentation (right to work in the UK) and a Home office Share code.
  • 5 years address history will be needed.
  • Applicants that are not UK Passport holders who provide less than 5 years UK address history will need to provide a Police Certificate which must be in English from where they resided previously.
  • Applicants who are UK Passport holders who have lived abroad for a period of more than six months during the last three years will need to provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited.
