What we’re looking for

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Specialist to join our dynamic Computer Aided Engineering team and play a key role in executing and delivering CFD studies focused on ship hydrodynamics & gas dispersion. Your primary responsibility will involve tackling complex challenges requiring innovative problem-solving and critical thinking skills. You will also collaborate with other teams specializing in Naval Architecture, Risk Assessment, Regulatory Compliance, and Failure Investigations, contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to ship performance. The successful candidate will become part of the talented group based in our Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Southampton (UK). You will also have access to many knowledgeable colleagues and training courses to pursue professional development.

The role:

  1. Working as part of the Advisory team based at the GTC in Southampton, United Kingdom
  2. Undertake project work as defined by team leaders mainly using numerical modelling as well as data analysis to draw conclusions in areas such as ship performance and failure investigations
  3. Occasionally attend model test facilities or on-site measurements
  4. Produce deliverables to the defined scope of work including high quality technical reports according to established procedures, on time and within budget
  5. Discuss and present the project progress and deliverables with the internal / external clients and suggest solutions where appropriate
  6. Assume responsibility for project management and administration from inception through to closure according to established procedures with emphasis on quality, timing and cost
  7. Be willing to occasionally attend domestic or international client and project meetings
  8. Support Naval Architecture, Risk, and Technical & Failure Investigation teams on an ‘as required’ basis receiving training where necessary
  9. Produce scopes of work and proposals to meet client expectations. Ensure consistency of proposals to clients according to established procedures
  10. Achieve targets for chargeable time in line with team management expectations
  11. Be pro-active in sharing knowledge with the team and advising colleagues based on reviews and own experience
  12. Maintain and develop business network within key contacts (internal to LR, clients, universities, institutions, suppliers, competitors, etc.)
  13. Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards
  14. Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness

What you bring:

  1. You will need the right to work in the UK to perform in this role.
  2. A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organization recognized by LR within the field of marine / aerospace / mechanical engineering or physical science. Post graduate degree in engineering (MSc, MEng, or PhD) is not required but would be an asset.
  3. Proven ability to track record in delivering Fluid Structure Interaction studies
  4. Proven ability in applying CFD software tools to deliver technical solutions to clients
  5. Proven ability in the technical domains of hydrodynamics, naval architecture, and fluid structure interaction
  6. Proven ability in the Project Management process, gained through experience, involving complex projects and stakeholder relationships
  7. Experience in delivering parametric optimisation using machine learning techniques
  8. Experience with programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, or C) is desirable
  9. Experience supporting a similar scope in the UK or Asia is considered an advantage.
  10. Experience of the shipping industry is highly desirable
  11. Working knowledge of Linux and CAD packages (e.g. Rhino 3D)
  12. Ability theoretical, analytical, and numerical skills for modelling, data interpretation, and problem classification, in order to solve complex challenges
  13. Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work
  14. Strong consultancy and engineering-oriented mindset
  15. Flexible and adaptable to new challenges
  16. Ability to work on your own or as part of a team on larger projects
  17. Membership of an appropriate professional institution
