Job description

Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist – Community Rehabilitation

We are looking for an HCPC registered SLT with relevant Clinical and Leadership experience who can demonstrate expertise in adult rehabilitation including dysphagia management. You must have strong leadership skills and experience in managing/supervising a clinical team, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centre approach, with a commitment to CPD and evidence-based practice.

As Clinical Lead you will have the opportunity to get involved with service developments, audit and development plans.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside highly specialist clinicians in voice, head and neck cancer, stroke, rehabilitation and neurological degenerative conditions to further develop your knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and manage a team of Speech and Language Therapists within the community rehabilitation service.
  2. Deliver specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for patients with communication and swallowing difficulties.
  3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers, to provide holistic care.
  4. Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
  5. Provide clinical leadership, support, and supervision to less experienced staff and students.
  6. Play an active role in rehab and therapy development, service development, quality improvement initiatives, and promoting best practice in speech and language therapy.
Person Specification
Qualification and Training
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification of equivalent
  • Health Professionals Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Completion of specialist short courses up to Masters degree or equivalent
  • Training in clinical supervision
  • Training in rehabilitation techniques for swallowing and communication
  • Cognitive communication training
  • ABI Training
  • Managing patient/carer expectations training
  • Therapy Outcome Measures Training
Experience
  • At least 2 years' experience at B6, working with communication and swallowing rehabilitation under the supervision of clinical lead
  • Advanced experience within specialist area
  • At least 4 years experience of managing dysphagia and communication disorders
  • Experience of joint goal setting and evaluation with patient and interdisciplinary team
  • Experience of training other professionals including assistants
  • Experience of developing, providing and evaluating training programmes to other professionals
  • Experience of managing complex caseload and ongoing service development work
  • Experience of supervising other staff members
  • Experience of leading and co-ordinating an area of SALT service
  • Experience of working in an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience of creating, delivering and evaluating service improvements
  • Experience of leading case conferences/best interest meetings
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
  • Well-established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • Well-established knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the client group)
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance/audit/NSF's/NICE guidelines etc.
  • Knowledge of record keeping standards
  • Aware of the wider context of the NHS within specialist clinical field
  • In-depth knowledge of the national agenda for clinical specialty
  • Knowledge of the national and local agenda for rehabilitation
  • Understanding of the roles of other professionals within an interdisciplinary context
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening, empathy and ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly developed negotiation and problem-solving skills

  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
