Job Summary

The Product Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day co-ordination of the product engineering function within the Quality and Technical team and is an integral contributor to the organisation’s new product introduction program inclusive of estimation, route definition, change management, and fixed process definition. It is critical to maintain positive communication channels between the team and its stakeholders in order to deliver on the departments KPI’s at Sheffield Forgings.

Key Objectives Of The Role

  1. Lead metallurgical development for products, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to standards.
  2. Generation and approval of quality specifications within the site ERP system.
  3. Generation and approval of technical documentation such as cut-up reports, methods of manufacture, and fixed process documentation.
  4. Generation of process routes in the site ERP system, including the definition of key process parameters.
  5. Liaison with external stakeholders to obtain approval of substantiation packages and technical approvals to enable shipments.
  6. Complete technical review of incoming purchase orders and specifications.
  7. Active involvement in the sites APQP initiative for new product introduction including the assessment of site capability to satisfy the customer requirements.
  8. Governance of the technical aspect of the site’s estimation process in the absence of the Product Engineer.
  9. Change management governance following the sites control systems.
  10. Drive a continuous improvement philosophy through the department, taking ownership of cost saving and productivity improvement projects.
  11. Any other ad-hoc duties as required.

The Applicant

  1. Knowledge in Metallurgy or Materials Science (forging/extrusion, heat treatment, material testing) will be desirable.
  2. Ability to read engineering drawings.
  3. Working knowledge of quality tools (such as APQP, FMEA, 6 Sigma, 8D, 5 Why) would be advantageous.
  4. Experience in forging/extrusion, thermomechanical processing, heat treatment, and conducting release testing.
  5. Working knowledge of AS9100 would be advantageous.
  6. Knowledge of Aerospace OEM technical requirements would be advantageous.
  7. Degree qualified in Engineering or Materials Science (or appropriate demonstrable experience in a technical biased role).
