We are seeking a Hardware Engineering Manager to join the team in one of the world’s most innovative Defence manufacturers on a permanent or contract basis. You will work on a hybrid working pattern of 3 days a week on site in the Manchester area.

The Role:


The Hardware Engineering Manager is responsible for the completion of engineering tasks within committed cost, schedule, performance and quality requirements. Projects may cover all or part of the range of activities regarding customer needs, mission, function, architectural design and life cycle of the hardware solution (requirements and speciality engineering, design, development, integration and verification).


Key responsibilities include:


  1. Generation & maintenance of the Hardware Engineering Management Plan (HEMP).
  2. Management of Hardware Engineering deliverables throughout the product lifecycle.
  3. Cost and schedule adherence.
  4. Management of expectations of key stakeholders.
  5. Resource Management.
  6. Milestone delivery performance.
  7. Organisation and Coordination of all Design Reviews & Independent Technical Reviews in accordance with the agreed lifecycle process.
  8. Generation of hardware engineering estimates as part of company bids.
  9. Engineering Quality and Performance.
  10. Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification Management of the Hardware Solution.
  11. Engineering governance, metrics and reporting.
  12. Risk and Opportunity management.

The Person:


The Hardware Engineering Manager must possess the drive and discipline to operate on a hybrid basis with a 3-day week based on site. You will be a positive and inspirational leader who will mentor and develop the team to upskill and maximise people’s potential.


The Hardware Engineering Manager will be a self-starter who is able to utilise their experience and knowledge to ensure hardware engineering activity is within the constraints provided by the Solution Engineering Manager and Solution and Hardware Architects.


The successful individual will possess a strong team ethos and involve not only the immediate team, but the wider business to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved and the customer objectives are met within time, cost and quality requirements.


Experience Required for the Hardware Engineering Manager:


  1. Educated to Degree level in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  2. Carried out a leadership/management role within Hardware Engineering.
  3. Full product lifecycle from inception through to design sign-off.
  4. Excellent communication skills to support cross-functional contribution.
  5. Able to build strong and lasting relationships both internally and externally.
  6. Experience within the Defence sector is advantageous but not essential.
  7. Must be able to secure SC Clearance.
