The ITU facilities are located in a 15 bed area in close proximity to the liver wards, theatres and laboratories and separate 4 bed area primarily used for level 2 patients; LITU forms part of the ITU/HDU complex taking the total bed pool to 19.

The ward services have recently expanded to provide in-patient beds for 58 patients with all aspects of liver disease. Patients are admitted as local, regional, supra-regional or international referrals. Supporting the ward-based service there is a dedicated outpatient service, providing daily clinics to all our patient groups.

There are close links with other specialist services such as liver radiology with regular multidisciplinary meetings. In house post graduate education programmes, audit and morbidity and mortality meetings in addition to journal clubs are all undertaken regularly.

10 full time or split job liver critical care consultants cover the unit 24/7, providing 3x day ward rounds and supervision of all admissions/discharges and management decisions.

The rota providing cover to the liver ITU is provided by 16 doctors, mostly at registrar level. Night-time cover is provided by 2 doctors, one of whom will be airway trained.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will be involved in fixed clinical commitments which would be determined by both their clinical training needs and the service requirements of the Liver Intensive Care Unit. The post holder will be expected to participate in the on-call rota on a flexible basis in accordance with the European Working time directive, and local trust policy.

The doctor undertaking the fellowship will be scheduled to undertake non-clinical, management and research aspects of the post through dedicated rostering.

Education and Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification.
  • Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice at time of appointment.
  • [MRCP] or equivalent.
Training and Experience
  • At least 1 year of working within critical care OR 6 months working within critical care and 3 years working within an acute medical specialty (anaesthesia, emergency medicine, acute medicine, internal medicine specialties).
  • Evidence of special commitment to critical care.
  • Demonstrable research experience.
  • Demonstrable teaching experience.
  • Experience of working within the NHS.
Personal Skills
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff.
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills. ATLS.
