Job description

An exciting development opportunity has arisen for experienced Band 3 Healthcare Assistant on ward 8 Stroke Transitional Unit at the Broadgreen site.

The post holder is expected to assist the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of care for patients and their families/carers.

You must be able to demonstrate experience in a hospital setting working at NVQ L2, must be signed off on the Care Certificate and be willing to undertake NVQ L3.

Successful applicants will be given further training and support to facilitate professional growth and career progression. This includes being enlisted in the Band 3 Upskilling programme.

The role will involve participating in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

Participating in all aspects of patient care, you will give particular attention to pressure ulcer care, personal hygiene, toileting, and feeding, reporting progress and raising any concerns to the Registered Nurse (RN).

You will work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

You will undertake a range of skilled tasks and duties with support from the Registered Nurse.

You will proactively lead in delivering all aspects of basic patient care, from admission to discharge, and will take a leading role in supporting and developing more junior staff and the development of the ward.

  1. Participates in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.
  2. Provision of patient’s toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  3. Support of patients in managing incontinence and promotion of continence.
  4. The recording of a patient’s fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts.
  5. Preparation and serving of patient’s meals, drinks, and snacks. Assisting/feeding patients as necessary.
  6. The recording of patient’s dietary intake when indicated in the patient’s plan of care.
  7. Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances.
  8. Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the Registered nurse in conjunction with the patient’s plan of care.
  9. Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from your mandatory training and in relation to the patient’s manual handling plan.
  10. Obtaining specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
  11. Removal of cannulae, catheters, and nasogastric tubes.
  12. Undertake the dressing of non-complex wounds (in accordance with identified competencies and in conjunction with the plan of care).
  13. Naso-gastric/PEG feeding once the tube has been passed and checked by a registered professional.
  14. Prepare and maintain environment for clinical treatments and investigations.
  15. Prepare patients for treatments, investigations, or procedures including offering support, answering questions appropriate to own knowledge/experience and assisting in recovery.
  16. Collection of blood products from laboratory as requested.
  17. Chaperoning and escorting patients to clinical departments within the hospital and to other hospitals for investigations.
  18. Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
  19. General and clinical observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff, to include:
    1. Recording of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate.
    2. Oxygen saturation monitoring.
    3. Recording of peak flow.
    4. Undertake blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and/or cannulation upon the direction of the registered nurse.
    5. Documentation in patients nursing records of any care given, ensuring the entry is countersigned by the Registered Nurse responsible for the patient at the time.
    6. Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provides assist to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations.
    7. Contribute to the development of Essence of Care and benchmarking.
    8. Provide a verbal handover of the patients care under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.
    9. Ensure due regard is given to customs, values, and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
