Senior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine (ST3)

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Critical Care in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment to deliver a critical care hub for Kent and Medway. We have recently moved to a new 24-bed purpose build unit which boasts excellent facilities for both patients and staff, including:

  • Hi-fidelity simulation suite within the ICU
  • Dedicated office and on-call rooms for junior staff

The department is approved for all stages of Intensive Care training and all clinical fellows will benefit from:

  • Named educational supervisor
  • Regular protected teaching which maps the FICM syllabus.

We offer 27 days' annual leave and active support for study, quality improvement and patient safety work as part of our 'We care' improvement journey, and medical education and research.

Main duties of the job

  • Review of critically ill patients on the ICU, emergency department and hospital wards
  • Admitting patients to the ICU under the supervision of the Consultant
  • Ordering and interpretation of investigations
  • Safe and effective handover between shifts
  • Participation in audit, patient safety and morbidity and mortality meetings
  • Organisation of multidisciplinary meetings
  • Active participation in the teaching programme (which follows the FICM syllabus)
  • Use the allocated non-clinical time (4 hrs per week) to pursue an area of interest in one of the following:
    1. Point of care ultrasound (FUSIC)
    2. Research
    3. Simulation and teaching
    4. Audit and QI

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent.
  • Completion of basic training in anaesthesia, medicine, EM or ICM.
  • MRCP, MRCEM, Primary FRCA or another post-graduate qualification.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to prioritise clinical workload.
  • Safe and effective communication.
  • At least 6 months experience working on an ICU.
  • Simulation teaching or instructor for advanced life support course.

Clinical Governance

  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Completion of audit cycle or QI.
  • Evidence of engagement in patient safety projects.

Personal/Professional Attributes

  • Punctual.
  • Hard-working.
  • Polite.
  • Organised.
  • Evidence of clinical leadership.
