About the role

We're excited to be looking for a Assessment Associate (Writers) within our Functional Skills team on a flexible worker contract.

The Functional Skills team are a small group who work together to produce outstanding assessment materials. As a team, we are passionate about producing assessments that are robust, inclusive, and fit for purpose. Our goal is to produce assessments that are engaging and allow our candidates to showcase their skills at a level that will allow them options in their lives, professionally or academically.

Assessment Associate – Writer

As a Writer, you will join the team as a subject matter expert, contributing to the development of assessment materials in your area of expertise within the functional skills maths sector. Your role will involve producing fit-for-purpose materials, such as question papers and mark schemes. You’ll apply your subject-specific knowledge to prepare draft assessment materials based on a range of topics, which will be refined over time with input from maths sector and assessment specialists.

How you’ll make an impact:

  1. Contributing to the production of high quality, reliable assessment content that reflects in-depth knowledge and understanding of the functional skills maths sector.
  2. Ensuring assessment content effectively assesses learners’ skills and knowledge, providing assurance of their readiness for entry level employment, higher education, or apprenticeships in the functional skills maths sector.
  3. Supporting the development of assessment content that meets all commissioning instructions, fully considers accessibility and inclusivity, and is compliant with Ofqual’s General Conditions of Recognition.
  4. Communicating effectively with other team members including Assessment Solutions Officers, Chief Examiners, Subject Chairs, and any other relevant groups or individuals.
  5. Engaging in training to support professional development, keep abreast of current trends, and develop assessment writing skills.

We'd love to hear from you if you offer the following:

  1. Experience of writing and/or reviewing external assessment materials (question papers/mark schemes/tasks) to Level 3 in Mathematics or other equivalent qualifications.
  2. Minimum of 3 years recent experience working in a relevant field.
  3. Experience of working within the Functional Skills Maths sector is desirable.
  4. Ability and/or willingness to engage with IT systems to facilitate effective remote working.
  5. Ability to offer, receive, and act upon relevant, constructive feedback.
  6. Ability to prioritise own workload and work to fixed deadlines.
  7. Experience, knowledge and understanding, and/or a desire to learn about the production of high quality, reliable, and inclusive assessment content in a range of contexts.
  8. Ability to work effectively as part of a hybrid team through clear, respectful, and timely communication.
