Job description

Stormwater BMP Inspector

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, seeks a Stormwater BMP (Best Management Practices) Inspector based out of our Rocky Mount, Virginia office. The primary responsibilities of this position include the site inspection of multiple linear construction projects for compliance with Project Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).

This position requires extensive travel (80-100%), with projects typically located within a one to two-hour driving distance in the State of Virginia.

The successful candidate must be able to work efficiently with little supervision while conducting inspections of erosion sediment control and stormwater BMPs in locations with little infrastructure. Other tasks may include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Inspecting construction projects to the requirements of erosion control, stormwater management, Chesapeake Bay, and related minimum codes and regulations.
  2. Examining construction methods and materials used to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and regulations; ensuring adherence to approved plans, materials, and specifications; preparing inspection reports.
  3. Performing technical work inspecting local construction projects to ensure quality control, environmental protection, and life-safety rules are enforced.
  4. Enforcing fieldwork, reviewing construction plans, and keeping accurate files.
  5. Communicating daily with contractors and engineers.
  6. Setting up and maintaining a variety of records and files.
  7. Preparing inspections.
  8. Performing other related duties as required.
  9. Assisting with the development of project SWPPPs.

We are seeking a motivated, self-sufficient, detail-oriented professional with strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills; and the ability to support the environmental team.

The successful candidate will primarily interact with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals throughout the firm who are focused on solving our client’s environmental challenges. This Stormwater BMP Inspector will perform and deliver project assignments with the associated responsibility for meeting profitability, quality management, and safety goals.

Required Education/Experience:
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent, and one (1) to two (2) years of experience in the construction site inspections; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provide the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
  2. State DEQ Erosion and Sediment Inspector and Stormwater Management Inspector certification preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
  3. Ability to utilize computer software such as Google Earth, and Microsoft products to include Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, and smartphone applications.
  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with project staff, client representatives, and resource agencies.
  5. Experience operating equipment such as GPS, laser range finders, cameras, etc.
  6. Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Desired Education/Experience:
  1. Dual Combined Inspector-Dual Combined Administrator in the state of Virginia.
  2. Familiarity with permitting and inspections under the state-implemented Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program for Virginia.
