Job description

Job Description

With a passion for wildlife and access, you’ll enjoy working with nature and want to inspire and motivate others. You’ll help to make a range of important habitats for wildlife even better for nature and make everyone feel welcome at our places.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in the delivery of an ambitious project funded by the Nature Networks Fund which will greatly improve habitats for nature, offer opportunities for people to develop skills in the countryside sector and to inspire more people to get outside.

This is a part-time opportunity of 22.5 hours a week. We are open to discussion on working patterns where these hours will be covered across 3 to 5 days.

This is a fixed term contract for 33 months.

This project is funded by the Nature Networks Programme. It is being delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government.

What it's like to work here

You’ll join an upbeat and dynamic team, who are passionate about nature, and creating an inclusive and progressive place to work, visit and volunteer.

You’ll be a key role in the Bannau Brycheiniog portfolio which covers a large area in south Wales stretching from Rhaeadr in mid Wales to Gower on the south Coast.

This role is based in our estate office in Libanus and you will cover a range of sites across the Bannau Brycheiniog Park.

What you'll be doing

As Project Ecologist, you’ll be responsible for surveying and recording the environmental conditions of the project sites and tracking the changes as they happen as a result of the project's work. Using your expertise in habitat surveying, mapping skills, and habitat assessments you'll help others understand the biological significance of our land. Often supporting and mentoring teams and volunteers in wildlife monitoring. You will be working with the local team, specialists and our NRW and Bannau Brycheiniog Park colleagues.

You’ll be actively working with our specialists to ensure changes to the project sites are recorded on a database. You’ll also be working with external contractors, farmers, colleges, schools, volunteers and communities from across the South Wales area and inspiring people to be involved in the Trust's exciting strategy ‘People and Nature, Thriving’.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you’re:

  • knowledgeable about UK habitats and species, ecological monitoring and evaluation
  • experienced in land management and the development of long-term management plans
  • skilled in evaluation and data analysis, familiar with associated IT programmes, biological recording and geographic information systems
  • used to presenting ecological data to, and engaging with, a wide variety of audiences
  • an effective communicator, able to build good working relationships
  • good at listening, building trust and giving a high-quality service to colleagues
  • someone with an eye for detail, good organisational skills and able to work at pace and keep to time
  • a champion for inclusion, who helps support everyone to feel welcome.

The package

The Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
